*An Important Message from Heartland FM*
It is with great sadness that we share this difficult news with our listeners.
After 34 years of serving our community, we have had to make the incredibly difficult decision for Heartland FM to cease broadcasting and close our doors.

This decision comes after a long journey of trying to find a feasible business model for the station, but due to the current financial climate and the increasing challenge of maintaining a sustainable future for the station, we are no longer able to continue operating.
Heartland FM has always been about more than just radio. It has been a community, a platform for local voices, a source of local news and information, and a place where friendships and connections have been built. None of this would have been possible without you—our loyal listeners.

On behalf of the board of trustees - Thank you for being part of our journey.

With heartfelt gratitude,Heartland FM

The most prominent World Cup referee with a local link in recent history is Hugh Dallas.

The native of Motherwell, who moved to and long resided in Perthshire, officiated at both the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, famously serving as the fourth official for the 2002 World Cup Final when Brazil beat Germany 2-0 in Yokohama.

Perth born Jim Blyth was Coventry City goalkeeper when he made the Scotland squad for Argentina 1978, but Alan Rough of Patrick Thistle played in goal in all three Scotland games at the tournament... conceding six goals in the three matches vs Peru, Iran and the Netherlands.

Many pundits at the time thought Blyth should have been brought in after our opening 3-1 defeat against Peru, but Jim's Scotland career was restricted to just a couple of caps which were both gained in 1978 against Bulgaria and Wales. Scotland beat Bulgaria 2-1 and drew 1-1 with Wales with Blyth being beaten by an own goal from Scotland defender Willie Donachie.

During the 2022 World Cup Perth-born David Wotherspoon became the first St Johnstone player to play at the tournament when he came on as a substitute for Canada vs Morocco in the 76th minute.

Former St Johnstone manager Willie Ormond took Scotland to the 1974 World Cup and an unbeaten run in the finals against Zaire, Brazil and Yugoslavia. Scotland were eliminated on goal difference at the opening group stage after Brazil scored one more goal than Ormond's side against the African team.

Scotland beat Zaire 2-0 and drew with the Brazilians (0-0) and Yugoslavia (1-1).
