I gave my World War 1 talk via Zoom to former pupils of my old school last month. Since then I have been quite busy researching the grandfathers of two of them. One was in command of a Field Ambulance at Gallipoli in 1915 and the other was blown into the air by a shell during the Battle of Cambrai. It is always rewarding when you find the detail.

I love it when a mystery is solved. I was helping someone in Australia with an ancestry problem when they mentioned they had a Legion d'Honneur Officier Class medal but had no idea who in the the family it belonged to. Made the break through today - it was awarded to her Great Great Grandfather.

I am still busy tracing relatives of the men of the 130th (St John) Field Ambulance in Word war One. I have found a link to three families in the last week alone.

I have just made my 200th daily post giving a snapshot of what the 130th (St John) Field Ambulance was doing 100 years ago toady in World War One.

In the last few months I have taken on several projects for my old school. Searching for the history and family of some quite eminent people connected with the school. Quite rewarding work.

My research in South Africa finally provided some relevant information and I was able to locate family members to Florida, USA. Sadly, neither of the two siblings I was searching for were alive but at least I was able to connect my client with their families.

Trying to extract family records information from South Africa is like getting blood from a stone. The records there are neither digitised nor indexed. Half the battle is finding a Research colleague who knows what they are doing. So, I have two cases which are ongoing - both are forward searches (to trace living people). On the weekend I surprised a friend by presenting him with his sixth great grandfather, born 1740 in Wiltshire. His grandfather had been adopted and he knew nothing of hid grandfather's mother and her family. He was astonished to discover that many of his 19th Century relatives worked with wood as some of his current relations are skilled carpenters.
