Popular social commentator VeryDarkMan (VDM) has once again stirred national debate with his comments on Nigeria's worsening security situation and government spending priorities.
Reacting to the continued capt*vity of k*dnapped children in Oyo State, VDM argued that the government has failed in its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property. He claimed that authorities should focus on doing whatever is necessary to secure the safe return of the children, including accepting the conditions of the abducto*s and end the cycle of ins£curity that continues to affect communities across the country.
VDM also questioned the government's reported investment of $500 million to upgrade Lagos Airport to world-class standards, arguing that security should take precedence over major infrastructure projects.
According to him, no matter how modern an airport becomes, investors and tourists are unlikely to choose Nigeria if they do not feel safe. He maintained that a country's first attraction is the security of its people and visitors, adding that infrastructure development should go hand-in-hand with effective security measures.
His comments have generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some agree that security should be the nation's top priority, others argue that infrastructure and security can be pursued simultaneously as part of national development.
The debate raises an important question:
Should Nigeria focus more resources on tackling insecurity before embarking on expensive infrastructure projects, or can both goals be achieved at the same time?
