Diwali celebrations begin on the 20th of this month, and Guru Boutique have cards available from our website to celebrate the occasion. Here's just one of them... Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations also observed in other Indian religions. It symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance" (Wikipedia).

The spirit of Guru Tribe (which is the driving force behind Guru Boutique), flickered into life around 1969/70 when Guru’s Beryl (after first discovering Kensington High Street and other wonders of London around that life-changing time), attended a legendary music festival on the Isle Of Wight.
Inspired by what she experienced there and had already discovered in ‘swinging’ London, she shared her revelations with her Mam (Irene) and Dad (Rupert). After her parents had also taken a few trips down to London to see for themselves what all the fuss was about, they totally ‘got it’ too.
It became clear what direction the future should take if at all possible. The aim had to be to bring some of this fantastic vibe back to their home town, Darlington.
After a couple of aborted attempts, which resulted in Rupert dropping out of the little trio Irene and Beryl stuck with the dream and by some miracle, in March 1972 Guru Tribe acquired more permanent bricks and mortar premise and Guru Boutique was established.
To begin with, the business traded in the run-down but extremely interesting Court Arcade (formerly the site of The Court Kinema - an early Darlington cinema which sadly burnt down). By 1989 the arcade had just got too dilapidated to inhabit any longer. This was due to constant flooding issues and other problems, which strangely enough the many customers and friends that Guru had acquired didn’t even seem to notice.
Anyway, in 1990, as they just couldn’t afford to keep on losing stock every time it rained, mother and daughter reluctantly left the arcade and moved to number 24 Blackwellgate, Guru’s present location. Needless to say, they took the Spirit of Guru and the goodwill of their friends with them. This historic and very pretty little four-story building has been the much-loved home of Guru Boutique ever since...
Guru Boutique tries to have something for everyone. The stock includes a wide range of soothing incense, healing crystals, fragranced and essential oils, interesting spiritual items, gorgeous or hilarious greetings cards for all occasions, unusual fair-trade gifts, clothing, accessories and textiles, silver and ethnic jewellery, Alchemy Gothic pieces, Directions hair colours, T-shirts, music-related merchandise and more.
Having said all that Guru is so much more than a business, it’s all about people and as I mentioned at the start of this description, the unique spirit of Guru tribe.
