The campaign to protect Skerningham is probably one of the longest and most dedicated grassroots campaigns to have ever existed in Darlington, alongside 'Barmpton and Skerningham Preservation Group' and 'NO to the Darlington Northern Link Road' (both active since 2017).
Since SWAG’s inception 4 years ago we have continuously questioned and brought pressure on the Council about the proposed development, most recently in connection with the proposed haul road and lack of transparency from the Council and the developers. We were told that hedgerow and tree clearance at Burden Gardens was nothing to do with the proposed haul road. We knew this to not be true, and SWAG wrote a complaint to the Council. This complaint has gone to Stage 2 and a subsequent submission to the Ombudsman. We have now been guaranteed by the Ombudsman that the Council will get back to us by 23rd October, many months after the initial complaint. Our questions in the complaint weren’t difficult, but they are struggling to find the answers for some reason!
We also have ‘Lottie’s List’ petition. Local school girl Lottie created a petition, off her own back, when she discovered she could potentially lose her favourite area for walking and to watch wildlife. Lottie’s List is an ongoing petition – please sign here: https://www.change.org/SaveOurSkerningham.
As well as campaigning tirelessly for Skerningham, with the support of over 1000 members on our Facebook Group, we have amassed a huge amount of photographs and footage of this incredibly beautiful and valuable area, destined to be buried under tarmac. Our library of photos and videos shows how biodiverse this small area in the corner of Darlington is. As well as being home to so much wildlife it is also frequented by rare and amber listed birds, and home to protected species.
During the last 4 years Skerningham has been used as a political football by all 3 main political parties in the town. The only consistent and genuine support that we’ve had is from the Green Party, for which we are very grateful.
We have some exciting plans looking forwards, to be kept under wraps for now!
What can you do? Object to the planning applications and sign the petition. Tell your friends and family about Skerningham and ask them to object and sign as well.
We will, in the near future, need people on the ground to help us deliver leaflets, to reach out to residents in the area that may not have access to social media. We’d love to have you on board and helping us. Please contact us if you would be willing to help. We can be contacted with a message through our FB page ‘Skerningham Woods’ or via email ‘[email protected].
Skerningham Woodland Action Group will continue to campaign for Skerningham, alongside all our wonderful supporters.
A BIG thank you to all of you for your continued support.
