‘It's blue and black’ ‘It's white and gold’ why did this dress go viral? 🔽
In 2015 this singular image blew up the internet in a massive debate on whether the dress was black and blue or white and gold. The phenomenon originated from Facebook; within a week, more than ten million tweets had mentioned the dress.
People’s perceived colour is also informed by their perception of lighting, whether the photo was taken inside or out or without it being lit from the back or front of the dress. The dress is actually blue and black, though most people saw it as white and gold, at least at first. Research shows that if you assumed the dress was in a shadow, you were much more likely to see it as white and gold. Why? Because shadows overrepresent blue light.
