Where were you on September 11th 2001? A few minutes before the first aircraft hit the twin towers I had just climbed over a fence and was standing on the wrong side of what was known as the su***de fence 140ft in the air on a bridge over the river Clyde in Glasgow. I was wearing a harness, with many climbing ropes, I edged along the fence for about 20 ft then using the ropes I swung under the bridge onto a platform, clipped myself to an H beam and I sat looking up the Clyde towards Glasgow, a fantastic view. I had a walkie talkies, a phone and a FM radio. I put the radio onto BBC Radio2 and minutes later a news bulletin mentioned that a light aircraft had hit one of the towers, so I switched to BBC Radio 4 for a better news report, never imagining what I was going to hear. I sat for at least two hours listening in disbelief, wondering if friends in New York were safe. As the hours went by Glasgow seemed to go quieter, the traffic and noise levels dropped, I drove home still listening to the radio, it was surreal, a very sad day.
