According to folklore, in every ijaw family there is this investment the ijaw people call "bou" in its actual meaning it is a pond. It is collectively owned by every family in every community. It is just like owning an oil well, every beginning and ending of the year they come together to bail the pond which in the izon language it is called "bou owein". This is done because the fishes in the pond "bou" had been kept for a period of time and they are so large. Buyers come from other communities to purchase this fishes from families that are willing to sell. They make so much money from such sales and share it amongst the family. In the same vein some families in the community can also decide to collect money from people to fish from their family pond, a practice that looks like collecting gate fee. The ijaw people see fishing as their first occupation so they do this to preserve their fishing culture. Adooo

According to folklore, a typical ijaw man who understands his traditional and cultural obligations does not despise a stranger/visitor. Instead he will welcome the stranger, entertain him and give him a piece of land to cultivate on. Little wonder, in-between every ijaw community there is a settlement called "Gbene" a collection of harmlet where people from a different tribe and community settle to fish and cultivate farm produce. The "Gbene" is also called "fishing port in most part of the ijaw region. Peledeh egberifah!
