The famous tall ship is already berthed at Meadowbank Quay as the clock ticks down to the biennial celebration of Derry’s proud maritime heritage.

It’s believed the summer solstice, or grianstad an tsamhraidh, falling on June 21, under the current Gregorian calendar, is likely to have been celebrated in pre-Christian Ireland as a festival of the sun. More recently these celebrations became conflated with the Christian feast of St. John the Baptist which falls on June 24. It was a time when bonfires blazed on every hillside, music and dancing resounded after the fair day, torchlit processions were held, and uncanny rites and blessings were invoked to protect barley and beast from the ill-will of the fairies and the evil one.
