Antediluvian elements within unionism have spearheaded the coat-trailing exercise, which has the potential to reignite community tensions not only in Co. Armagh but across the North. What is their end goal? Those with long memories remember how the Drumcree dispute lit a touchpaper in the mid-1990s. The North was convulsed. In Derry, local man Dermot McShane, was killed when he was hit by a British army vehicle during riots in July 1996. It was a time marked by loyalist sectarian atrocities. We are not going back there but why reopen such a divisive episode in our recent history?

We stand with the community that has had 28 years of peace, 28 years without fear, tension and confrontation that surrounded Drumcree, and we stand with them today in saying very clearly that peace should have been protected and not that an unwanted sectarian march should be forced past their homes."

Area Commander of Derry City & Strabane, Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney said: “Our courageous and dedicated officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect the local community. Valuable police resources were used to deal with this situation last night, resources which should have been available to help victims of crime. It is completely unacceptable.”
