🏰 The Game of Thrones Door That Had to Be Hidden for Weeks 🏰
I need to tell you about the most extraordinary thing I discovered at Ballygally Castle in Northern Ireland.
At the entrance to the castle restaurant, there is a door. Most guests walk right past it. But this is no ordinary door.
This is the actual door from Game of Thrones — Season 6, Episode 9: Battle of the Bastards. One of the most iconic, most-watched episodes in the history of television.
But here is the part of this story that stopped me cold.
Ballygally Castle received this door several weeks BEFORE the episode aired on June 19, 2016. And the problem? The door's design — its carvings, its imagery, its detail — revealed who won the Battle of the Bastards. It was a physical spoiler, sitting in the lobby of a hotel.
So the hotel did the only thing they could.
They covered the entire door in wood and told no one.
For weeks, Ballygally Castle — a 400-year-old haunted castle on the wild Antrim Coast — held one of the biggest secrets in Game of Thrones history behind a sheet of timber. Staff knew. Guests had no idea. The world was still waiting to find out who survived the Battle of the Bastards.
Then June 19, 2016 arrived. The episode aired. The world finally knew.
And the covering came down.
That door has stood at the entrance to the restaurant ever since, in full view, one of the most remarkable pieces of television history hiding in plain sight in a castle that has been standing since 1625.
As the host of Haunted Canada Podcast and owner of Edmonton Ghost Tours, I thought I had heard every great haunted history story Ireland had to offer.
Ballygally Castle proved me wrong. 🕯️
