Devon with a starring role as Jane Austen's beloved classic returns to the big screen 💚🎬

From Focus Features and Working Title comes a new take on the iconic Sense and Sensibility: a charming and relatable story of love and sisterhood, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles.

Director Georgia Oakley wanted to make the world of Jane Austen come alive in a way that would feel both authentic yet imminently relatable to today’s audiences.

“I was really trying to get into what it might have felt like to live in Devon 200 years ago, steering away from this preconceived idea that we have about Austen, that everything takes place in a stuffy drawing room,” said Oakley.

“The locations and the set design and the costumes having a loose, unbuttoned feeling, that was definitely part of my overall vision.”

Key to Oakley’s vision was visiting real-world locations including in Dorset, Knebworth and Devon - and capturing them on film 🎥

“For a long time now, I have only worked on film,” Oakley says. "There’s a certain look that a 35mm gives you. I love that it’s imperfect. It’s a living, breathing thing."

Sense and Sensibility will be out in cinemas in the UK on September 25th, and in the US on October 16th.

🎬 BBC is commissioning new documentaries - and they want to hear from filmmakers and producers outside of London.

The BBC has just opened a rolling commission for BBC deepwatch — its new YouTube-first documentary channel for 16-24 year olds. Successful films will also air on BBC iPlayer 📺

💰 £50,000 indicative fee per documentary
⏱️ 25 minutes minimum runtime
📅 3 months from commission to delivery
🔄 Rolling brief - no fixed deadline, but no reason to wait!

They’re looking for stories across three themes:

🌱 Coming of age - the foundational issues and experiences shaping young adult life in the UK
👨🏻‍💻 Online culture & digital worlds
🔎 Hidden systems & underworlds — deep dives into obscure worlds, networks, economies and power structures beneath young people’s everyday lives

Ideas need to be built for YouTube from the start - not repurposed TV - with genuine access, strong visual storytelling, and real relevance to 16-24 year-old audiences.

If you’ve been building a documentary reel and looking for a way into BBC-level commissioning, this is about as direct as it gets.

And if you pitch - let us know, we’d love to follow your story!

On Sunday we were at the cast and crew screening of Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars at the iconic Empire IMAX on Leicester Square (love that building).

Really enjoyed watching this one. It’s a beautiful looking film - some of the aerial plane shots are stunning.

Holly from Film Devon was part of the crew on this production which was particularly special for her with Bladerunner being in her top 10 favourite films of all time 🏙️

The Dog Stars is out today in the UK and Friday in the US.

Out later this month, The Dog Stars. Film Devon’s Holly had the pleasure of working on this Ridley Scott production, tutoring some of the young cast.

The Dog Stars tells the story of Hig (Jacob Elordi), a young pilot who, together with military survivalist, Bangley (Josh Brolin), has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post-apocalyptic world until a mysterious radio transmission spurs Hig to venture into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exists.

Based on Peter Heller’s bestselling book, the film features Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce.

Out in cinemas August 26 🍿
