My name is Esmé Bates, and this past year has been the most creative and transformative of my life. After decades working in education as a speech and drama specialist, my world changed when I began using a standing wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis. Strangely — beautifully — this created space for something new: a writing life I didn’t know I was capable of.
In the last twelve months I’ve written an enormous amount: screenplays, theatre plays, poetry anthologies, radio pieces, TV pilots, novels, and movement-based performance texts. Creativity has become my way of staying connected, energised, and alive.
Of everything I’ve written, there are twenty titles I’ve chosen to self-publish through KDP — each one representing a different corner of my imagination, a new world, a new character, a new form. These books are small pieces of my journey as a disabled writer carving out a voice and a future.
Today, I’m reaching out to explore representation, partnership, and paid writing opportunities.
