To finish off my little trip back to the 80s, what was the best selling single of the whole decade? Band Aid's Do they know its Christmas. Not that surprising given the message and reach the song had at the time (Yes I do remember it...) and also the repeat nature of any decent Christmas song. So it may be more interesting to know that the number 2 best selling single of the decade was Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax. They also took the number 4 single of the decade slot with Two tribes. Back to the highest selling songs of the 80s and picking up again with 1989. Heres a song that is controversial because it sampled Loleatta Holloway's amazing vocals from 1980 "Love Sensation" They later paid Heather Small to redo the vocals and paid a flat session fee with no credit despite the 850k singles sold. The Italian producers did the same with Martha Wash who provided vocals on 6 of the 8 album tracks but again, not credited and just paid session fees. Their problematic name and the way they treated black artists has gone largely un-noticed as the tune remains a floor filler even though the Italian artists didn't understand English enough to recognise the original lyric "Right on time..." Oh, and Jive Bunny's "Swing the mood" was runner up with 820k copies sold. Who said the 80s were a golden age?....

I just love how my FLX10 manages the lights so there is an actual show rather than the random in-beat flashing you normally get from sound to light systems.

Well 1988 wasn’t much better. The charts were dominated by Stock Aitkan Waterman tunes (similar to AI output but without the “i”) and the number one single of the year was Cliff Richard’s sickly Miseltoe and wine (sorry, not linking that on my page…) Number 2 was more promising with “The only way is up” and that’s hopefully how the rest of the 80s into the 90s will go….

Well 1987 was a weird year. There were some solid hits that year like Whitney’s “I wanna dance with somebody” (No3) & M/A/R/R/S “Pump up the volume” (No10) The weirdness included Sinatra’s “Toy boy” (No27) & Man2Man’s “Male Stripper” (No40) but the biggest mark on history was Rick Astley’s “Never gonna give you up” at No 1. I’m not about to rick roll you all so I’ll instead drop the weirdness of Firm’s “Star Trekkin” (No9)
