It’s been an eventful few weeks celebrating my birthday. I went to Manchester to watch Thundercat live; I’ve been a fan of his music since The Golden Age of the Apocalypse, so seeing live for the first time was a real treat. Also, being the dweeb I am, went to see The Mario Galaxy Movie, which wasn’t as fun as the first but enjoyable, nonetheless.

Of course, with adventuring to a different city and having my Birthday, naturally ya boy got some new books – because his ‘To Read Shelve’ isn’t stacked already…

The Complete Chronicles of Conan – Various Authors
Tell Me I’m Worthless – Alison Rumfitt
Parable of the Sower – Octavia E. Butler
The Vegetarian – Han Kang
Darkness at Noon – Arthur Koestler
50 Essays – George Orwell

Thank you to those family members and friends who gifted me some of the above.

And Galaxy Grifter did just that.

Written by the talented (and good writer friend) Galaxy Grifter is a fast-paced heist, space-opera with morally dubious characters, sass, and of course, spaceships. The story follows interstellar conman Levi Adder (aka, The Weasel) and out of luck programmer Vera, who embark on a heist together and get much more than they bargained for, sending them spiralling into an intergalactic conspiracy which may see the end of humankind.

The book's style is clean and concise, written with neurodivergent people in mind. Honestly, when I was reading it, the experience reminded me of being a kid turning the pages of a Goosebumps book. You’ll whizz through chapters as the language effortlessly flows from one word to the next, always moving the story along; it’s truly impressive, and I’m proud of her achievement. It keeps the genre’s pulpy elements, whilst sprinkling modern tropes one expects from romantasy – though, given the nature of the book, without spice.

However, unlike some sci-fi, the book doesn’t have any grandstanding or philosophical pondering to lubricate the mind; it’s not the book's intention. A. Zaykova wants people to lay back, relax and enjoy the ride. So, .
