Rudolf Höss was the first commandant of Auschwitz, serving from 1940 to 1943 and returning in 1944 to oversee operations during the mass deportation of Hungarian Jews. During his time at the camp, Auschwitz expanded from a concentration camp into a vast complex that included Auschwitz-Birkenau, which became the largest N**i killing center.
Höss was responsible for the administration and expansion of the camp and for implementing the SS system of imprisonment, forced labor, and mass murder. Under his command, hundreds of thousands of people were deported to Auschwitz, where Jews were systematically murdered in gas chambers alongside other victims of N**i persecution.
Höss lived with his wife and children in a house close to the camp, while atrocities were being carried out nearby. After the war, he was captured by British forces, tried by a Polish court, and sentenced to death. He was executed by hanging at Auschwitz on 16 April 1947.
His life at Auschwitz illustrates the disturbing contrast between ordinary domestic life and the systematic mass murder carried out by the N**i regime.

The “Little White House” (Bunker I) at Auschwitz-Birkenau was one of the sites used for mass murder during the Holocaust. Hidden among the trees, this small building became part of the N**i extermination system, where countless Jewish people and other victims were murdered in gas chambers.
Today, the site stands as a place of remembrance and a reminder of the consequences of hatred, antisemitism, racism, and dehumanization.
We remember the victims. We preserve their stories. We must never forget.

Canada II at Auschwitz-Birkenau was part of the vast system of warehouses where belongings taken from deported prisoners were sorted and stored. Today, the remains of this site stand as a powerful reminder of the victims of the Holocaust and the human suffering that took place here.
