Hetton Colliery Railway was the proving ground of the railway system.

When the railway opened in 1822, engineers flocked to see the groundbreaking technology on show.

The railway connected the Hetton Coal Company's colliery to coal staithes on the River Wear at Sunderland. George Stephenson's design used steam power and inclines instead of horses to move trains, making Hetton the first railway in the world to be designed without the need for horses.

Lyon was once thought to be the oldest working steam locomotive in the world.
But analysis of the construction techniques and materials has shown this was not the case.

While it closely resembles an early Stephenson locomotive design, it was built using updated materials and methods in the late 1840s.

The wagon has doors underneath so it could be emptied into a ship waiting below. With no side doors, chaldron wagons - locally known as black wagons - were exceptionally strong and perfect for heavy loads. The term 'chaldron' originally referred to around 2.5 tons of coal, but this one carried around 4 tons.

Completed at Swindon in 1939, 5080 was initially named Ogmore Castle. In 1941 it became Defiant, named after a Second World War aeroplane, and was first assigned to Old Oak Common shed for main line express work to Birmingham and the West Country.

Withdrawn in April 1963, 5080 remained in Barry scrapyard for nearly eleven years before the Birmingham Railway Museum Trust (now Vintage Trains) acquired it.

Though originally bought for spares for 7029 Clun Castle, an intensive restoration programme began at the end of 1985 to return Defiant to working order.

Restoration continues at Tyseley locomotive works.
