M-Sport Ford World Rally Team driver Josh McErlean will make a headline-grabbing return to the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship next month [19-21 June], contesting the legendary Donegal International Rally in an M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally2.

The full-time FIA World Rally Championship contender is currently competing at the pinnacle of the sport in a Ford Puma Rally1 but will take time out of his demanding international schedule to tackle Ireland’s most iconic rally for the very first time. McErlean will be joined by fellow Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy member Eoin Treacy on the Donegal stages.

The appearance marks a significant homecoming for the rising Irish star, whose rapid ascent through the sport has seen him progress from Junior competition to the very highest level of the FIA World Rally Championship in just a few short years.

McErlean’s first taste of the Irish Tarmac Championship came in 2019 when he contested the series in a Peugeot 208 R2 as part of the Junior British Rally Championship, which used West Cork as a counting round. That season proved to be a launchpad for a hugely successful international career, leading to stellar performances in both the FIA European Rally Championship and WRC2 before his graduation to Rally1 machinery with M-Sport.

Now in his second season competing against the world’s elite, McErlean says the opportunity to finally compete in Donegal is one he simply could not turn down.

“It’s been a dream of mine to contest Donegal for many years now, so to finally get the chance to do it is very special indeed,” said McErlean.

“I grew up standing on the hedges watching this rally. I’ve been there most years as a fan, so to now be competing on the event after all this time makes it even more special. There is nothing quite like Donegal, the atmosphere, the fans and the enthusiasm around the event are completely unique and I can’t wait to be part of it.”

McErlean will head to Donegal fresh from Rally Japan, the latest round of the FIA World Rally Championship, with the Irish event fitting into a narrow gap in his international schedule ahead of the Acropolis Rally in Greece just one week later.

Despite the tight turnaround, the opportunity to compete on home soil was one he immediately embraced.

“When you get the chance to do Donegal, the answer is yes; then you figure out what you need to do to make it happen,” he added.

“It just about fits into our WRC programme, and to be doing it in an M-Sport Fiesta Rally2 is fantastic. Obviously, it won’t be quite the same as the Puma Rally1, but I’m sure everything will still feel very familiar very quickly.”

McErlean has also been closely following the action in Ireland throughout the season and expects a fiercely competitive challenge when he returns home next month.

“The competition in Ireland is always incredibly strong, and Donegal is no different. The entry list is always packed with quality, and you know there are so many crews capable of fighting at the front,” he said.

“Of course, there will naturally be some expectation around us going into the event, but honestly, I just want to enjoy the experience, the rally, the fans and being back competing on home soil again. It will also be really nice to showcase the Fiesta Rally2 at the event and thank you to M-Sport for the opportunity”.

“I must say thank you to all of our partners for making this possible. Everyone has worked hard behind the scenes to make it happen, and I can’t wait to get started."

McErlean is backed by Woodland NI, Kelly Motorsport, Crosshill Enviro, UCAR, Jefferson Professional Tools and Equipment, Merrow Hotel and Spa, McCormack Contracting Inc, Adams Transport, Admore Air Conditioning, KG Motorsport and Pirelli for the rally.

Yeats Ridge Forest Rally kicks off 2026 Season
Press Release –

A new season always brings excitement, and it is especially true as we get set for this weekends opening round of the 2026 Trailer Parts & Spares Irish Forest Rally Championship. With a brand-new sponsor for the loose surface series, things kick off with a bumper entry for the Yeats Ridge Forest Rally, a brand new event that has attracted a bumper entry for Connacht Motor Club.

As announced recently, the Irish Forest Rally Championship are thrilled to announce Trailer Parts & Spares as Title Sponsors for the series, beginning immediately, with an incredible commitment of a three-year partnership agreed between both parties made on the back of the success the series has had in recent years attracting larger entries, introducing new events and growing the next generation of Irish Rally talent.

Rebranding the series as the Trailer Parts & Spares Irish Forest Rally Championship through to the end of 2028, it’s an incredible opportunity for the Tyrone based firm to boost their brand awareness right across the island of Ireland, but it’s also a huge boost to the Forest Championship.

With a sizeable reserve list still in place on the eve of the opening round, its clear to see the huge interest that the 2026 Trailer Parts & Spares Irish Forest Rally Championship has already attracted, and the fight for title honours is set to be red-hot right from the off. Leading the 100-car field away for the very first Yeats Ridge Forest Rally are former champions Derek Mackarel & Eamonn Creedon in a Ford Fiesta R5, while multiple rally winner Mark Donnelly makes a return to the series with Martin Brady alongside in a VW Polo GTi R5.

Gareth Mimnagh & Barry McCarney arrive to Sligo in their Ford Fiesta Rally2 fresh off strong seasons end that saw them podium on the Dogleap & Fivemiletown events, while another former champion is sure to be in the hunt with 2015 & 2018 winner Josh Moffett joined by Andy Hayes in a Hyundai i20 R5.

A new season always brings a host of new machines, and its true once again with Jordan Hone & Paul Hone swapping to a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, David Condell & Mick Coady having a first taste of the newer again Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, while rising stars Keelan Grogan & Ayrton Sherlock make their 4wd debut on gravel in a Ford Fiesta Rally2.

The 2WD field is just as wide open looking at the bumper entry. 2025 Champions Hugh McQuaid & Declan Casey lead the way in their Ford Es**rt MK2, but will their hands full dealing with the returning Mickey Conlon, himself a multiple time 2WD champion, with Shane Maguire alongside, as well as the ever-quick fellow Es**rt pairing of Paddy McToal & Connor O’Loan. Such is the incredible training ground that the Forest Championship has become for developing a new generation of young talent, the following eight seeds are young guns in front-wheel-drive Rally4 machines with the likes of Ben McFall, Oran England, Danny Brady, John Ward & Jack Harris all looking to replicate the success Cian Caldwell saw in 2025 where he claimed a number of 2WD victories.

The J1000 field remains incredibly strong heading into 2026, even with quite a number of stars migrating up to Class 2A this season. Fresh from a victory on the final round of 2025, James Wray & Peter Ward lead the twenty-car entry but will have their work cut out with Jack McDermott & Paddy Robinson, Adam Ronan & Colm Ronan as well as James’s twin brother Matthew Wray & Joe McNulty all having tasted podium success already in their short careers!

As mentioned, the Trailer Parts & Spares Irish Forest Rally Championship continues to see the addition of new events, with the recently announced 2026 Calendar seeing the introduction of the Maiden City Motor Club’s Dogleap Forest Rally for the first time, as well as brand new events such as this weekend’s Connacht Motor Club’s Yeats Ridge Forest Rally which opens the campaign, and the Laois Motor Club Forest Rally later in the season.

With the Sligo-based Yeats Ridge Forest Rally opener on February 15th, things move south to Dungarvan on April 18th for the Moonraker Forest Rally. In late June Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club have the tantalising prospect of a two-day Willie Loughman Forest Rally on the 27th & 28th, while the Jim Walsh Cork Forest Rally roars into Kanturk on August 9th.

The second half of the calendar sees a trio of Northern Irish events, a unique element of the series that truly captures the huge shared interest in Forest Rallying on both sides of the border. September 5th sees the Enniskillen based Lakeland Stages, while two weeks later is the Bushwhacker, the Omagh event back to a single day on September 19th. Laois slots onto the calendar for the first time on October 4th, before things head for a dramatic season conclusion with the Dogleap Forest Rally in Limavady on October 17th.

The Trailer Parts & Spares Irish Forest Rally Championship caters for competitors from 14 years of age who are starting their career in the Junior 1000 classes, but such is the variety within the series that class winners in recent years have ranged in age right up to those knocking on the door of 80, and everywhere in between. With no recce, centralised servicing and compact routes, the series and its events cater for everyone in an incredibly competitor friendly manner.

McErlean eager to rebuild as WRC Rally Sweden beckons

PRESS RELEASE - For immediate release - 6th February 2026

Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver Josh McErlean is determined to turn hard-earned Monte-Carlo lessons into momentum at WRC Rally Sweden
McErlean enjoyed an encouraging stage pace in Sweden last year on the unique snow and ice event
Positive pre-event test boosts confidence ahead of WRC’s only full winter rally Focus firmly on progress and consistency as M-Sport Ford World Rally Team ace looks to get his 2026 season back on track
Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver Josh McErlean arrives at Rally Sweden next weekend [12-15 February] focused on leaving a punishing Rallye Monte-Carlo behind and kick-starting his 2026 FIA World Rally Championship campaign.

Following one of the most extreme Monte-Carlo events in decades, McErlean has been quick to reset and refocus after a difficult start to the season in his M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1. The Irishman endured a challenging curtain raiser after sliding off the road in the wintry conditions, leading to repeated road-opening duties. But the experience has only sharpened his determination heading into round two of the championship.

Rally Sweden, the WRC’s only pure winter event, offers a very different test, and one that plays to McErlean’s growing confidence on snow and ice. He produced several encouraging stage times on the Scandinavian event last season, showing his ability to perform on studded tyres when conditions are more consistent.

A productive pre-event test earlier this week has further bolstered confidence within the M-Sport camp, allowing McErlean to build rhythm and fine-tune his approach ahead of the fast, snow-lined stages around Umeå.

“Sweden is a rally I’m really looking forward to. The conditions are much more consistent, and that gives you a chance to build confidence and commit to driving. There is no experience like threading a Rally1 car through the snow-lined banks either, it’s crazy fast,” says McErlean.

“We showed last year that we can set good times here, and that’s something I want to build on. The goal is to be cleaner, more consistent and turn that into a solid result.”

The Irishman is clear that the opening round has already been processed, and attention is now fully on maximising the opportunity that Rally Sweden presents.

“You can’t change what’s already happened, but you can learn from it. The important thing now is to take those lessons and apply them moving forward.”

“We had a positive test this week, which has given me confidence in the car and in what we’re trying to achieve. Now it’s about putting it together on the stages.”

Rally Sweden takes place next week in the far east of the country and is set to be one of the fastest events of the season. A total of eighteen stages spread over 300 kilometres lie in wait, beginning on Thursday night [12 February] with the traditional fan favourite spectator stage ahead of three intense days in sub-zero temperatures.

McErlean is backed by Woodland NI, Admore Air Conditioning, M.P Burke Transport, SDC Trailers, EC Framing, Tulach Properties, Carbon Fusion, Fastener Connections and McCormack Contracting Inc.

Such a shame that none of the M-Sport Pumas got to the finish this weekend but it was a fantastic start to their WRC debut season for Jon Armstrong Rally and Shane Byrne, showing their pace and potential for the year ahead. Great start lads, with so much experience gained, and so much to help towards the next event in Sweden. 👍
