A number of homes and businesses in Driffield town centre are currently without electricity following a power cut.

The affected properties are located on Middle Street South and Market Place and have been without electricity since around 7am.

THE DUCHESS OF KENT HAS DIED AT THE AGE OF 92

Some sad news this lunchtime - Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the Duchess of Kent has died at the age of 92.

The duchess was the oldest member of the royal family and was married to Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, the late Queen Elizabeth II's first cousin.

A music lover, she taught music at a Wansbeck Primary School in Hull during the mid-1990s, where pupils didn't know anything about her royal life and was simply known as Mrs Kent.

The duchess was regularly seen watching tennis at Wimbledon and handing out trophies.

The Duchess of Kent was born in Hovingham, North Yorkshire, and became part of the royal family in 1961 when she married the Duke of Kent at York Minster.

"It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent," said a statement from the royal family.

"Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.

"The King and Queen and all members of The Royal Family join The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss and remembering fondly The Duchess’s life-long devotion to all the organisations with which she was associated, her passion for music and her empathy for young people."

THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS ISSUED FOR EAST & NORTH YORKSHIRE THROUGHOUT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY

The Met Office has issued two warnings for thunderstorms for parts of East and North Yorkshire during Wednesday and Thursday.

The first warning begins at 11am and will run until 8pm. During this period, thunderstorms associated with scattered heavy showers may cause some impacts, says the Met Office.

People living in the warning area are being told to expect the following:

- There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus

- Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from strong winds and/or lightning strikes

- Delays to train services are possible

- Some short term loss of power and other services is likely

- There is a small chance that a few properties could become flooded

Scattered heavy showers, some with thunder, are expected to develop later this morning and into the afternoon, before easing this evening.

In the most active storms, hail, strong gusty winds, and lightning may be impactful.

There is also a chance that a few spots could see frequent, heavy bursts of rain, leading to surface water flooding.

The second warning comes into force at 2am on Thursday and runs until 5pm.

This will see an area of heavy showers and thunderstorms, moving northeast, which may cause some localised flooding.

During this period, people can expect:

- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

Bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to move northeast across parts of England and Wales on Thursday.

As showers progress northeastward they will become temporarily slow moving, leading to an increased chance of surface water flooding.

Whilst the vast majority of places will have either non-impactful rain or remain dry, a few places within this area could see 30-60mm in an hour.

Hail and lightning will be additional, possibly locally impactful, hazards.
