WHEN OUR BUSES HAD NAMES

Sheffield’s streets have always been full of characters, but how many people have spotted the Sheriff of Nottingham, Dennis the Menace, Captain Hook and Oliver Cromwell?
Transport company Andrews operated a fleet of yellow and blue buses which were given their own names. These included famous Sheffield characters, football teams, Beano personalities, police officers and the cast of Peter Pan!
Here are some of our favourites, can you name any more?

BLUE PLAQUE UNVEILED

Heron Publications was delighted to sponsor a Blue Plaque unveiled to mark the birthplace of one of England’s most famous footballers - goalkeeper Gordon Banks.
A ceremony took place at the former Arthur Road, off Sheffield’s Abbeydale Road, and those attending included Gordon’s son Rob and daughters Julia and Wendy, together with nephew Nick Banks of the band Pulp. They were joined by the Lord Mayor Coun Safiya Saeed, former Sports Minister Richard Caborn, Tony Currie and many others.
Andy Kershaw of the Sheffield Home of Football organisation said this was the 11th plaque installed in the city to highlight Sheffield’s football heritage.

SAME PLACE, DIFFERENT DAY

Pictured is Sheffield City Centre in 1966.
The top picture shows an outdoor escalator being delivered by crane to the High Street. It was, of course, destined to transport shoppers up and down from the eagerly-anticipated Angel Street pedestrian underpass - later to be dubbed ‘The Hole in the Road’.
The bottom image captures the same scene just a little while later when the escalator, plus one on this near side of High Street, had been installed. Barriers had also been put into place to protect pedestrians from the vehicles above.
