Fantastic news from the government! 🎉 A new electric vehicle (EV) grant has been announced, aimed at boosting EV sales across the UK.
Backed by a substantial £650m funding package, private buyers are now eligible for grants of up to £3,750 when purchasing a new electric car. However, it's important to note that the grant is limited to vehicles costing up to £37,000 and will be based on each model's green credentials and carbon footprint during production. Notably, Chinese brands are excluded from this scheme.
This comes on the heels of last week's £63m commitment to enhance the UK's EV infrastructure, making now an ideal time for the automotive sector to seize one of the biggest opportunities of the 21st century. 🚗⚡
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander remarked, "This EV grant will not only allow people to keep more of their hard-earned money – it will help our automotive sector seize one of the biggest opportunities of the 21st century." With over 82,000 public charging points available, the infrastructure is in place for families to make the switch confidently.
In the words of Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, "This announcement is a clear signal to consumers that now is the time to switch. Rapid deployment and availability of this grant will help provide the momentum to take the EV market from just one in four today, to four in five by the end of the decade."
Although the uptake of EVs has risen by 34.6% this year, making up 21.6% of the new car market, sales to private buyers have actually dropped by 10.8%. Edmund King, AA president, welcomed the new grant, urging drivers to take full advantage of this opportunity to overcome the price barrier to EV ownership.
