Rachel from Adelaide has been in contact with Mark for over a year. We both had busy schedules but we finally managed to meet up today at Dumfries Station. At Rachel’s request, we made a beeline to Sam Heughan’s Galloway Distillery where she was welcomed and looked after by Dave. He expertly explained the process and the unique local botanicals. As the driver, I more interested in Sam’s impressive motorbike. After purchases were made, we had a lovely lunch at Readinglasses in Wigtown, Scotland’s National Booktown. Garlieston was our first stop after lunch. This quiet wee coastal village had a major impact on WWII as it was the testing ground for the D-Day Mulberry Harbours. We continued round The Machars coastline before heading back to Dumfries.

It was Day 2 with Brian from Boston yesterday. Starting in Dumfries we visited St Michael’s Parish Church and the Robert Burns Mausoleum.

Heading west, we explored Threave Castle - a short walk and boat trip to this island fortress.

The beautiful setting of Balmaghie Kirk was next. Going up through Laurieston and Knocktinkle, we stopped off in Gatehouse of Fleet for a lovely lunch at The Iron Brew Café.

After lunch we had a wander around the stunning remains of Glenluce Abbey.

Dunragit and the Droughduil Mound were next. On the road back, we stopped at
Torhouse Stone Circle and Wigtown Parish Church.

Today Mark picked up Brian from Boston, Massachusetts, at Lockerbie Station.

Brian is researching his family history. On our route we visited Eskdalemuir, The Loupin Stanes, The Girdle Stanes, Jamestown (following the Meggat Water), Glendinning (birthplace of Thomas Telford who is revered as The Father of Civil Engineering), Westerkirk Library and Staplegordon.

In Langholm (The Muckle Toon) we enjoyed lunch at The Eskdale Hotel. After a wander around Langholm we called into
Gilnockie Tower - The home of the infamous Border Reiver, Johnny Armstrong.

We took the Galloway Tourist Route via Gretna and Annan back to Dumfries. Tomorrow we head west into Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire.

Jan from Brisbane has long wanted to visit the Maxwell stronghold of Caerlaverock Castle. En route, we visited Castledykes where Robert the Bruce first declared himself King of Scotland in 1306.

At Caerlaverock we were fascinated to watch the high level masonry inspections and repairs being carried out by Historic Environment Scotland. The Castle is getting ready for its 750th birthday celebrations in 2027. If you are a Maxwell then next year is your homecoming.

After Caerlaverock, it was the 8th Century Ruthwell Cross. This early Christian relic is a sight to behold.

For lunch it was a delicious Homity Pie (egg, leek and tattie) at Loch Arthur Farm Shop. A first for Jan.

After lunch it was a walk and a short boat trip over the River Dee to see Archibald the Grim’s 1369 impressive Threave Castle.

Next up was The Artists’ Town of Kirkcudbright. Heading round the coast, our final stop of the day was Dundrennan Abbey where Mary Queen of Scots spent her final night on Scottish soil.

A fantastic day in beautiful autumnal sunshine.

Today Mark took the lovely Jan from Brisbane on a tour of Dumfries and Nithsdale. After exploring the historic sites and stories of the town, we went to Robert Burns House. Then it was St Michael’s Church and Burns Mausoleum. We headed across the river to the Robert Burns Centre.

Heading north, we visited Ellisland Farm, where Burns composed Auld Lang Syne and Tam o' Shanter, and Friars Carse. Afterwards we had a lovely lunch at Jenny’s Tearoom in Thornhill.

Next up was The Pink Palace of Drumlanrig Castle. In the grounds we saw Andy Goldsworthy’s striding arch in the Marr Burn. The resting place of Dukes and Duchess of Buccleuch at Durisdeer Church.

Turning off at Auldgirth we went to Dalswinton Church and Estate before heading back to Dumfries.
