Talking point! 💬

We've been thinking about the importance of having hobbies – especially the act of pursuing your interests, both old and new, well into adulthood.

Do you have any "obsessions" and interesting pastimes that you've kept up or discovered later in life? If so, what are they, and how do you engage in them?

Let us know in the comments below. Our favourite responses will be published in the next Talking Point section of The People's Friend magazine.

Findmypast has launched the growing Faces of the Fallen Collection, featuring over 3,500 photographs of soldiers who were killed, wounded, or went missing during the First World War. Extracted for the first time from the pages of historical newspapers, they offer a poignant glimpse into the faces behind the names etched on memorials across the UK.

Throughout the Great War, thousands of photographs of soldiers were published in newspapers to commemorate local heroes – often covering full pages of print. These poignant images have been extracted for the first time and curated into a new searchable record set, available to access for free until November 13.

It will help Brits uncover their personal connections to the Great War, preserving the stories – and images – of soldiers whose legacies may otherwise have faded over time.

Corresponding research commissioned by Findmypast highlights the scale of the challenge: almost a third of UK adults (29%) are unsure whether they have relatives who served in WW1. Of those who know they have a war hero relative, more than two-thirds (63%) know ‘little to nothing’ about them.

Findmypast is working with historian, author and presenter David Olusoga to encourage further exploration and understanding of these wartime heroes as an act of remembrance.

Commenting on the collection, David Olusoga said: “This new data suggests that over time, the personal links that connect us to the people who lived, fought, and sacrificed in wartime slowly fade. When a third of people no longer know their own family’s role in the First World War, we risk losing not just individual stories, but our understanding of the effects that the war had on the nation. It’s imperative that we continue to remember these lost family members by uncovering and understanding their experiences – and records and photographs are an ideal place to start.”

We're loving Game of Wool with Tom Daley on Channel 4 at the moment!

It's basically Bake Off but for knitting enthusiasts. A group of 10 amateur knitters escape to the Scottish Highlands and compete to be crowned Britain's Best Knitter. It's colourful, it's fun and it's challenging.

Judges Di Gilpin (left) and Sheila Greenwell (right) set the knitting tasks, while host Tom Daley expertly distracts the knitters by floating around the workroom head to toe in his own bold and bright knitwear.

Are you enjoying the show so far? Is it making you feel crafty and inspired?

We're thinking about the culture of Christmas shopping – how much money to spend, whether regifting is acceptable, mandatory workplace secret Santa, and so on.

Has Christmas shopping culture spun out of control? Do you regift or set limits to curb your spending?

Have your heard about this new landmark step forward in women’s healthcare in the UK?

A major NHS update has been announced that will bring menopause advice into routine free health checks for millions of women across England.

The plan is to include menopause questions and support for the first time nationally, raising awareness of symptoms and giving women the confidence to seek help.

This marks a major shift in women’s healthcare as the Government overhauls outdated systems as part of a mission to build an NHS fit for the future.

Did you feel adequately supported during menopause, or did you feel completely alone? Does this fill you with more hope for the future?

We've been thinking about meat consumption. In particular, cutting down our meat consumption for the sake of the environment.

Do you engage in ‘flexitarianism’? If so, what are your reasons, and if not, why?
