The dark history of Scotland’s Fearn Abbey disaster ⚡️🏛️ On October 10th, 1742, a freak lightning strike turned a crowded Sunday service into a sudden nightmare. When the massive stone-flagged roof collapsed entirely inward, it trapped the congregation beneath tonnes of rubble.

While 36 people were killed instantly, others survived by diving under heavy oak pews, and the assistant minister heroically wedged his body under a crumbling doorway to keep the exit open.

Have you ever visited this historic Highland ruin? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 👇

PLEASE NOTE I've just spotted an error on the video I miss spelled Fearn on the title of the video! doh!

Tucked away in the sleepy fishing village of Hilton on the Tarbat Peninsula, you’ll find one of the most incredible ancient secrets in Scotland.💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✨

Note on that first clip: The turf-covered foundations you see right at the start of the video are the ruins of the ancient church next to the monument, known historically as Our Lady’s Chapel. ⛪️

Standing right beside these church ruins is the magnificent Hilton of Cadboll stone—a full-scale reconstruction of a 9th-century Pictish masterpiece. While most ancient monuments from this era honor kings or male warriors, this one completely rewrites the narrative by featuring a high-status woman riding side-saddle right at its center.

But the history takes a bizarre turn. Back in 1676, a local man actually toppled the original monument, completely chipped away the massive ancient Christian cross carved on the reverse side, and recycled the stone to use as his own gravestone.

Heading up to the third floor of the abandoned Hartwood Nurses’ Home, and the damage up here is heartbreaking. 🥾🔥

A lot of people assume this place was just left open to the elements, but when the nursing college shut its doors for good in 2000, the entire building was completely secured and boarded up. 🔒

Unfortunately, over the years, the barriers were broken down by relentless vandalism, structural theft, and the harsh Scottish weather. The final, devastating blow came in November 2025, when a massive fire tore through the structure. The inferno brought most of the roof crashing down, though small sections incredibly managed to survive. 🏚️💥

Standing up here among the scorched stone and debris with the sky wide open above you is surreal. 💔👀

Thanks again to Gforce UK for the tour!

Moving up to the second floor of the abandoned Hartwood Nurses’ Home. 🥾🏥 Part 1 was just the beginning, but things change completely on this level as we dive into the building’s final chapter—The College Days!

In 1992, this massive 1931 Scots Baronial complex was transformed into the Lanarkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery. These exact corridors were filled with students training in general nursing, midwifery, and mental health care. 🩺

A lot of people don't know that when the main psychiatric hospital closed in 1998, this college actually outlived it, staying open right here in the nurses' block until 2000! 🔒

It’s wild walking through these empty rooms imagining decades of medical history just left to crumble. 🏚️

Make sure to hit that follow button right now, because in Part 3 we are heading up to the third floor to see the devastating aftermath of the fire where the roof caved in! 💥🔥

Deep inside the ruins of the iconic Hartwood Nurses' Home in North Lanarkshire. 🏚️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We’re starting this explore up on the 1st floor, because the ground floor was way too dark to film! 🔦

ℹ️Please note that I'm the UK the first floor is probably referred to as the 2nd floor everywhere else.

While many recognize the famous twin towers of the main abandoned Hartwood Psychiatric Hospital, this grand Scots Baronial shell tells a completely different story. Built in 1926, this massive residential block wasn't for patients—it was a self-contained home built to house the massive workforce running one of the largest asylum complexes in Europe.

From its strict 1930s curfews under the watchful eyes of the senior sisters, to its final chapter as a nursing and midwifery college, we’re uncovering the hidden history left behind in the decay.

Hit follow for Part 2 as we head deeper inside the ruins to explore what it looks like today.
