James III, Scotland’s fifth Stuart monarch, didn’t make his relatively short life easy.

Crowned at the age of eight (or nine; disputed) and in control by 17, James III either unwittingly or without regard, excelled at getting on the wrong side of the wrong people. From parliament and the clergy to ambitious nobility and his own family, James was anything but politically savvy.

“Lots of people came from different countries to work here and just fell in love with the island...''

Lismore, an island situated at the very south of the Great Glen within Loch Linnhe between Oban and the Isle of Mull, is just 10 miles long and one-mile wide with a population of only 160 people. At the link below we find out what life is like on this small but beautiful island: https://www.discoverbritain.com/destinations/scotland-magazine/lismore-the-great-garden/

Edinburgh is full of strange stories but perhaps the most peculiar of all the city’s tales is the mystery of the Arthur’s Seat coffins.

In 1836, a group of young boys hunting rabbits on Arthur’s Seat stumbled upon s a stash of 17 miniature coffins hidden behind carefully placed slates.

Here, we uncover the mystery: https://www.discoverbritain.com/heritage/mythology/mystery-of-the-arthurs-seat-coffins/

Have you ever been to the Bone Caves of Inchnadamph, about 20 miles north of Ullapool?

Reached by a 1.5- mile walk along the Allt nan Uamh burn, the caves look like archetypal hermit or monk cells. Instead of being an abode for troglodytes, the caves are named for the unusual bones uncovered here, of polar and brown bear, wolf and lynx, carnivores that once prowled this terrain but are now locally extinct.

We discover more of Ullapool here: https://www.discoverbritain.com/destinations/scotland/ullapool/

Clan MacLeod is descended from a man named Leòd, who was said to belong to the Norse family that ruled the Isle of Man in the 13th century. He owned lands on Harris and Skye, and married a daughter of the Norse ‘seneschal’, or governor, of Skye, who owned the lands round Dunvegan: https://www.discoverbritain.com/history/clans/clan-macleod/

Arbella Stuart is not a name history has done well to remember, which is strange when you consider that she had one of the strongest claims to succeed Queen Elizabeth I on the throne.

Here, we look back at the eventful life of Arbella Stuart, a Stuart descendant denied the status she deserved: https://www.discoverbritain.com/history/icons/arbella-stuart-odds-against-arbrella/
