As term draws to a close, we’re sadly saying goodbye to another wonderful Editor-in-Chief. Isla Mustin has finished her time leading the paper after two terms of hard work, late nights and huge commitment to the team.
Isla first joined Palatinate as Food and Drink Editor for Indigo, where her enthusiasm for the section and her genuine interest in student stories stood out straightaway. She later became Deputy Editor and quickly became someone the whole team relied on during print weeks and busy terms.
Stepping into the role of Editor-in-Chief was the natural step for her. Throughout her time in the role, Isla brought a friendly and collaborative presence to the newsroom. She helped guide the team through some of the biggest stories of the year, from breaking news to long evenings finishing the paper.
Her reporting has shaped much of our coverage this year. Her interview with a Durham scholarship student trapped in Gaza gave an important insight into a moment that affected many in the community. She also helped cover exam marking errors and the voluntary redundancy scheme and always focused on how these issues were being felt by students and staff.
In her final print edition, Isla’s piece on the new academic frameworks facing students took the front page. It was a strong finish to her term and reflected the determination and care she brought to her reporting.
Isla has been a thoughtful and supportive presence in the newsroom. She has been someone people could always go to.
Next term she will move into the role of Investigations Editor. We know she will bring the same careful, detailed approach to her work there and we are excited to see the stories she will lead.
We are so grateful for everything Isla has given to the paper and we hope she finds a bit of rest before starting this next chapter. She will always be part of Palatinate.
