North East, UK We don’t make content.

We make films with heart, soul, and purpose. Bonny Lad Productions is a video and television production company based in the North East of England. We specialise in crafting premium factual content — from broadcast documentaries to brand films — that cut through the noise and leave a lasting impression. Led by seasoned Producer/Director Jonny Smith, we’ve built a reputation for powerful storytelli

ng, striking visuals, and editorial integrity. Whether it’s a fast-turnaround digital campaign or a cinematic series for streamers and broadcasters, we bring the same obsessive attention to detail and creative fire to every frame. We work with:

• Broadcasters & streamers looking for compelling unscripted series or standout talent-led docs.

• Brands & agencies wanting video that moves people — and gets results.

• Production companies and agencies needing trusted creative leadership: Shooting PD, Producer, Director or Edit Producer.

• Freelancers who want to collaborate with good people, making great work. We’re proudly based in the North East, but our work travels — from factory floors to football stadiums, boardrooms to broadcast. If you’re after safe, beige, forgettable — we’re not your people. But if you want films with edge, honesty, and heart — let’s talk.

A very different brief from the same couple of weeks working with easyJet ✈️

This time with Greggs (the one and only) - launching five new sausage roll dips to celebrate the new easyJet base at Newcastle Airport☀️

A North East staple, a few new flavours, and a fast and frantic day - early start, multiple locations, and a same-day edit to pull it all together.

Doing what we love, working with great teams and brands 💛

A busy couple of weeks working with easyJet ✈️

This one with the Digital Poverty Alliance - helping get tech into the hands of kids who need it most.

A really important piece of work, and something that aligns closely with us at Bonny Lad 💻

We love making work that makes a difference - if this leads to even one more piece of tech being donated, then it’s done its job.

It’s our birthday! 🥳

From day one, it’s been always been about telling stories - made with care, packed with emotion and built on real relationships.

A year of shoots, edits, early starts and late finishes - and there’s plenty more to come.

Thanks to everyone who’s worked with us, backed us, and been part of the journey so far.

We’re only just getting started 🚀

Brilliant end to a busy week at Bonny Lad.

One of those weeks that reminds us why we love this weird and wonderful industry!

Monday: Shot branded content for easyJet ✈️

Tuesday: Attended the launch of Phase 1 of Crown Works Studios in Sunderland 👑

Wednesday: Shot for a new true crime show coming soon 🕵️‍♂️

Thursday: Edit Day 1 of the easyJet film 🖥️

Today(!): Edit Day 2 and delivery 📦

Tomorrow: Filming a new single for the BBC 🎺

Sunday: Rest (hopefully).

Weeks like this are a reminder of how varied the work can be - filming, editing, events, new projects starting, others wrapping up. Grateful to be busy and doing what we love 💛

Yesterday marked a huge moment for the North East creative industry.

Hearing that Sunderland’s Crown Works Studios will now move ahead after so much uncertainty, is exactly what the industry and the region need right now - a sense of hope, progress and something to believe in.

The studios have the potential to make a generational impact - not just on the creative sector, but across the whole region. And as a production company based in Sunderland, with Crown Works just over the river from us, it’s beyond exciting to finally see progress.

Bonny Lad were invited down to the site to see the announcement first-hand, and the excitement and optimism was clear to see. We were then asked to speak to ITV Tyne Tees, about what the development could mean for the North East.

Whilst we should absolutely welcome the news, it’s also important to remember this is just the start. Yesterday’s announcement represents 10% of what was originally planned, so we need to push for the rest ourselves and ensure this project reaches its full potential. Let’s keep the champagne on ice until we see our fantastic local talent inside those studios, making world-beating TV shows and movies. The hard work starts now.

Undoubtedly, this project would have fallen by the wayside without a few key backers. Huge credit should go to Kim McGuinness- North East Mayor, North East Screen, Sunderland City Council and the North East Combined Authority for pushing this over the line.

There’s now a real glimmer of hope that our wonderful region can kick on, and become the creative powerhouse it deserves to be.

Global brand. Local impact. 🌍🏡

We recently shot this film for Amazon Business, featuring Durham County Council, looking at how smarter procurement can help councils work more efficiently while supporting local economies here in the North East.

As regular Amazon Business customers ourselves (sometimes too regular!), we didn’t realise how closely Amazon works with partners to help ensure spend stays local where possible - something which is also important to us.

Produced by the brilliant Kakaw Productions and shot by Bonny Lad.

Proud to collaborate with creative partners, global brands and regional institutions doing meaningful work right here in the North East.

The North East BIC is the place to be 💛

After 12 years working across BBC, Channel 4, Netflix and more, Jonny set up Bonny Lad Productions at the BIC - creating a permanent base for his work in the region.

With the support of the BIC team, Jonny has taken the leap into building a sustainable creative business, rooted in the North East and focused on creating opportunities for local talent.

A reminder of what’s possible with the right support network behind you.

A couple of behind-the-scenes moments from filming with Jimmy Nail for his Stories and Songs tour.

A cracking few days in very good company.

What a pleasure it was to work recently with the man, the myth, the legend himself - Jimmy Nail.

Bonny Lad shot and edited promo films for his upcoming Stories and Songs tour, which has already been a huge sell-out, with extra dates added.

Jimmy is such an icon, not only in the North East but nationally and globally too, and it was a privilege for us to spend time with someone so talented, witty, kind and completely hands on - scripting the films himself and even popping down to the office to sit with Jonny and edit together.

Geordie, gent and a giant of screen and stage - the ultimate Bonny Lad.

We’re very proud to be featured in Living North this month.

The article captures why we started Bonny Lad: a belief in emotional storytelling, delivered with real impact and raw authenticity - alongside a commitment to growing the North East creative sector and creating meaningful opportunities here.

We believe the North East deserves more than box-ticking token gestures. There’s serious talent here, important stories worth telling, and a bright future worth investing in.

Thanks to Faye Dixon at Living North for the feature.

Great news for the region, and just a stone’s throw from our office!
