It was the year 1916. Cold winds swept across the battlefields of France. In the distance, the roar of cannons, the trembling ground, and the rising smoke made it feel as if the world was coming to an end. Amid all this destruction, a young soldier James Carter sat in the trenches, holding a letter from home In the letter, his mother had written
My son, we are all fine. Come back soon. The house feels empty without you

James’ eyes filled with tears but he knew he could not return yet. A major assault was planned for the next morning.

The next day, the attack began. Bullets flew from both sides. James noticed an enemy soldier lying on the ground, crying for help. Gunfire echoed everywhere, officers shouted:
Move forward!
But James couldn’t ignore him. Risking his life, he rushed toward the wounded enemy.

While carrying him back toward the trench, a bullet struck James in the chest but he didn’t let the wounded soldier fall. With great difficulty, he brought him to safety then collapsed to the ground.

As he lay dying, James pulled out the same letter from his pocket now covered with blood. His final words were:
Mom I won’t be able to come home, but I saved a life

That night, a nurse gently closed his eyes.
The next morning, soldiers from both sides—including the enemy soldier he saved placed a flower on James’ grave.

The story teaches us:
Wars are fought with hatred, but humanity always survives in brave hearts
