Do you remember the magic of Windsor McKay’s 'Little Nemo in Slumberland'? 🌟 I’ve been revisiting that world lately, blending the charm of vintage print with modern collage animation. It is a reminder that sometimes the simplest constraints—like a limited palette and a sharp, etched line—can lead to the most visual pleasure. We’re pulling back the curtain on our process to show how these layers click together. Read the full article here →

We are thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes look at our work on "The In Between," premiering at the Bay International Film Festival this January. Created by Byron Vincent, this film is a beautiful, messy, and urgent conversation about neurodivergence. We discuss why we chose a handmade, tactile animation style to mirror the "frenetic synergy" of the ADHD mind.

This is how we bring handmade soul into the virtual world! 🎬

Our new 30, second reel, "From Handmade Prop to Virtual Production," gives you a super quick glimpse behind the scenes of The Cowgirl Project. Watch the journey of our papier, mâché cloud:

It starts as a physical prop, goes through 3D scanning via photography, and then we add the traditional 2D animated face. You see the magic when Plume Films maps that face onto the scanned cloud surface in Unreal Engine, then watch it come to life on the virtual production set with the actress, cameras, and lighting.

This film shows the true harmony between virtual production and traditional 2D craft.

You can view the full two minute film and read the technical breakdown on the Plume Films website, link in bio!

Here is a quick, fun loop we put together, showcasing one of the most technically rewarding moments of The Cowgirl Project, the cloud explosion.

This clip, taken directly from the virtual world, is a perfect demonstration of our hybrid workflow. You can clearly see our handmade and scanned props, the cardboard houses and street furniture, sitting seamlessly in the Unreal Engine environment.

The Evil Cloud itself was a challenge solved collectively: its scanned papier, mâché surface was lit internally by the team at Racquet Studios to create that incandescent glow. We then mapped a traditional 2D animated face onto its contours. The final touch, the dramatic rain and lightning, was traditional 2D animation, merging all three worlds beautifully.

Even when immersed in big projects, our team loves a moment of creative play! We've been experimenting with some black-and-white, grainy aesthetics for the documentary we're animating with Byron Vincent, and this little looped animation came out of it – a silhouette diving, a figure floating. It’s a playful aside, a quick splash of visual poetry not destined for the main film, but it captures some of the joy we find in pure animation. Enjoy the loop, and remember to find time for a creative break!

We believe that passion projects are the lifeblood of creativity, but bringing them to life requires a clear plan. We have learned that the "boring" details of a funding application are actually the key to a project's success.

By taking our time and chipping away at the budget and research, we have found that new ideas and opportunities present themselves.
