What happens to our sense of identity when we migrate?
In the second episode of Amplifying Her Story, we revisit a powerful story by Gabz aka Gabriela, Brazilian multidisciplinary artist, creative consultant and cultural producer based in Bristol, UK, first published by Migrant Women Press in 2021.
Gabz reflects on migration, identity and belonging and how music and art helped her reconnect with herself, her memories and her Brazilian roots while building a life in the UK.
“Art is always giving me a way to process things that I dont necessarily now how articulate, especially here.” explained Gabz. Alongside her creative practices, she works with museums and archives, exploring questions around representation, cultural memory and whose stories are preserved.
Her story is a reminder of the role that art and culture can play in keeping us connected to who we are, particularly when migration asks us to navigate new places, identities and ways of belonging.
