THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR MULTI-SITE PROJECTS

Intro:

A lot of health care projects in the NHS are national with wide distances between them. With EU cross border projects such as this is more obvious crossing different borders and boards such as Scotland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. They provide challenges as well as opportunities.

Challenges:

There are challenges of long distance between sites to travel with time spent during travel that could have been used implementing projects and producing deliverables.

There are challenges with communication across long distances. Communication is easier when closer and face to face, than when far over the telephone for example. It is easy for misunderstandings to occur across long distances.

Differences in time zones may make collaboration challenging as some people may be be getting ready to sleep while others are getting ready to work.

There may be cultural differences as well. Different cultural norms may lead to misinterpretation. In parts of Japan for example, it is considered rude for a worker to go home before the boss.

There may be differences in priorities as different teams in different parts of a country or the world may have different and often conflicting priorities that may affect projects.

Multiple partners all trying to do the same thing

Opportunities:

There are opportunities for multidisciplinary working and better deliverables

There are opportunities of multicultural cross fertilisation of ideas and better innovation

It allows shared learning from experience

It allows access to shared expertise and resources that may not otherwise be available

Strategies for optimisation:

Building of trust by stakeholder analysis and engagement

shared division of labour

mature levels of engagement and communication through use of tools such as Teams and Zoom

Work life balance

Strategies for team building that includes relaxation, breaks, exercise and meditation
