Listening to them talking about the Oedipus play on the radio, now on in London, the Robert Icke one, it is incredibly good.
It was incredible when I saw the International Theatre of Amsterdam performance at Edinburgh Festival a few years ago, would be fascinated to see it in English.
On another level as far as any other play I’ve seen, I can’t remember another better one (apart from the Last Days of Mankind of course)

Still a need for us to be making work about this.

Following Made In Scotland last August our show, Tales of Transatlantic Freedom, including the song Send Back the Money (the name of the campaign Frederick Douglass came to Scotland to promote) was performed in Virginia during US Black History month. But it is relevant any month of the year.

Creative production and transnational projects

Yard Heads comprises artistic director John Paul McGroarty and producer Alexandra Lort Phillips. They are working together to bring interesting work to new audiences. The first major project is The Last Days of Mankind by Karl Kraus a creative collaboration between Leith Theatre, Theaterlabor Bielefeld, Teatr A Part Katowice Poland with further participation from Plavo Požoriste Belgrade, Kultura Medialna Dnipro Ukraine, Smashing Times Dublin, Association Arsène France. The overall project is called Project 1568, it was conceived four years ago by John Paul after he met Siegmar Schröder from Theaterlabor and they began an exchange involving the international partners which has resulted in the current work supported by Creative Scotland Open Projects Fund and Creative Europe Cooperation Project Fund.

The main piece of Project 1568 is a production of The Last Days of Mankind by Karl Kraus. Written in Vienna in German the play is a mammoth text which has been translated very recently in full by writer and philosopher Patrick Healy of November Editions Amsterdam. JP and Alexandra undertook the text research, visits and dramaturgy for the version of the play that will be used in the production.

There will be three adaptations of the play to be presented in Leith Theatre, Edinburgh opening on 11/11 marking the centenary of the Armistice of WW1 followed by Theaterlabor in Bielefeld in 2019 and by Teatr A Part in Katowice later in 2019.

In Edinburgh the creative decision to commission The Tiger Lillies and top visual designer Mark Holthusen was made by John Paul and they have created brand new work for the show.
