William Hare was never convicted of murder.

When the police finally closed in on Burke and Hare, Hare struck a deal with the prosecution. In exchange for giving evidence against William Burke, he was granted immunity from prosecution.

While Burke was publicly hanged in 1829, Hare simply disappeared.

No one knows for certain what became of him. Some believe he returned to Ireland, while others think he changed his identity and lived out the rest of his life in obscurity.

One thing is certain…

His name became forever linked with one of Scotland’s darkest chapters.

William Burke wasn’t a doctor.

He was an Irish labourer living in Edinburgh who became one of the most infamous figures in Scottish history.

In 1828, Burke and his accomplice William Hare murdered 16 people over the course of around ten months, selling the bodies to anatomy lecturer Dr Robert Knox for medical dissection.

Their crimes shocked the nation and changed British law forever.
