Paper at the Cutting Edge of Fiction

With paper in our name and romantic notions in our head we draw your attention this Tuesday to the thoughts of Mark Z. Danielewski who demonstrates that there's life in the old form yet.

Publishing for Danieleski is a sculptural activity. His stories are inextricably bound to their printing process. In his atelier three people (one of them he) wrote, stitched and scanned his novel The Fifty Year Sword together. The images below display these embroidered and scanned pages and the emphasised objecthood of the book. What about online publishing Danielewski? "The electronic form will be explored, but the reality is that the electronic forms available are not really up to speed with what I'm doing".

This quote is borrowed from an article in the latest edition of The Skinny (page 26 of the Scotland edition) where you can read all about his thoughts on print publishing and the form of the novel. If these things are your interest we recommend you follow this link: http://www.theskinny.co.uk/ and navigate your way to the article. Enjoy!

Tuesday Reading - (Time Delay)

This Wednesday morning we suggest your reading be slowed down and jumbled up. Twitter users can enjoy the weighty tomes of some big name authors in 140 character snippets over time spans accumulating to months and months and months. In honor of James Joyce this Blooms week, start following https://twitter.com/UlyssesReader and finally tick The Big Difficult Book off the list. Read it interspersed with the latest news broadcasts and Bill Murray quotes for a very different reading of the great book. I have a feeling Joyce would approve of this new-fangled fragmentation!

“Every life is in many days, day after day. We walk through ourselves, meeting robbers, ghosts, giants, old men, young men, wives, widows, brothers-in-love. But always meeting ourselves.”
― James Joyce, Ulysses

Enjoy!
