🎣 The only man on the water

The Fish of the Month for our January issue was kindly shared by Steven Murgatroyd, who lives near Oswestry, Shropshire.

Steven's winning catch came during a memorable day last May when working his way around the entire perimeter of Loch Whinyeon in the Scottish Borders, buffeted by wild, windy conditions that kept every other angler away.

The bleak landscape and foreboding weather didn't deter the Shropshire-based angler, who has over 55 years' fly-fishing experience. He'd sneaked away for a few hours during a short holiday, fishing hard despite the conditions, but by late afternoon he'd had nothing to show for his persistence.

As he prepared to pack up, he caught sight of something on the periphery of his vision: the water's surface momentarily flattening between the waves. He cast a Hopper to the spot.

"Immediately the line tightened as the fish took off towards the centre of the loch," he recalls. After a "dogged fight", a beautiful wild hen brown trout, estimated at around 2½lb, folded into his net.

"Suddenly the weather didn't matter," said Steven. "I was the happiest fisherman in the world. I gently returned the fish back to the brooding loch before breaking out my hip flask for a warming, celebratory dram, content in the knowledge that sometimes persistence and optimism do pay off."

🗞 Grogarry Lodge celebrates Bella Cameron's 55 years of service

Few places in Scotland can accommodate large groups of anglers in such style as Grogarry Lodge in South Uist, writes Nick Dawson.

The fishing can be superb, but it is the lodge’s welcoming staff that make an angler’s stay so special, and this month, the community-owned estate celebrates a special milestone when host and housekeeper Bella Cameron marks 55 years’ service.
