Ninety-odd per cent of Paul Procter’s river casts are built with slack on purpose.

More than a third of Ireland's wild salmon carry the genes of farmed escapees.

University College Cork analysed DNA from 6,322 juveniles across 133 rivers and found introgression in 34 per cent of populations. The team wants mandatory monitoring, rapid sampling after breaches and stricter containment.

Britain's waters could soon be on the school timetable.

A government consultation is under way on the proposed content of a new GCSE in Natural History for England, and freshwater habitats feature prominently. Under the proposals pupils would study the UK's habitats, from rivers and marshes to woodland and farmland, alongside human impacts on the natural world and the causes of biodiversity loss. The qualification would require 20 hours of fieldwork, with rivers among the habitats students could survey at first hand.
