Over $872 Million Sent Home by Gambian Diaspora in 2025

The Central Bank of The Gambia has revealed that remittances from Gambians abroad reached over $872 million USD last year. This announcement was made today, 10th January 2026, during the Ninth Stake in the Nation Forum, continuing the tradition of highlighting the vital contributions of the diaspora to the country’s economy.

As part of national crackdown operations on irregular migration departures, the Joint Security Task Force in North Bank Region, a composition of GID, GAF, GPF, SIS and other sister agencies, is currently hosting a community engagement forum with the villagers of Jinack Kajata.

This high-level security engagement recognizes the critical role communities play in supporting law enforcement and curbing migrant smuggling.

The forum seeks to address underlying security challenges, promote resilience and embolden communities with the ability to understand security dynamics and evolving migration trends that continue to pose threat to the lives and livelihoods of community members.

Gambian–Germany based middle distance athlete, Omar Jammeh, has once again demonstrated his commitment to the development of sports and youth empowerment by donating sportswear and shoes to Team Eis, his former school Muslim Senior Secondary School, and some individual athletes.

The Gambia Police Force, through the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) in Kerewan, has today continued Operation “Storm Watch” in the Jinack Islands as part of sustained efforts to combat irregular migration and secure coastal communities in the North Bank Region.

Led by the Officer Commanding Kerewan PIU, CSP Jatta, a platoon of officers was deployed to Jinack to consolidate gains recorded during earlier operations and to ensure that no irregular migrants, facilitators, or vessels remain within the islands.

Defending Champions, Real De Banjul FC has suffered yet another setback in their journey of title defence as Coach Ebrima Jatta's side lost 1.0 to Hawks FC in the city derby at the Kabekel Football Field.

Amadou Camara's goal in the 5th minute was enough as Hawks FC walked away with maximum points at home to Real De Banjul FC.

The defeat is Real De Banjul's third successive defeat following similar results against Bombada FC and Gambian Dutch Lions FC.

Sierra Leonean President and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Julius Maada Bio, is expected to arrive in Guinea-Bissau this day, Saturday, accompanied by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as part of ECOWAS’s ongoing monitoring of the country’s political situation.

According to a press release issued this week by Guinea-Bissau’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders will hold high-level meetings in Bissau, including with the High Military Command, as part of regional political and institutional oversight.
