An Edinburgh mum has heralded a capital school for changing her family’s life.
Emma Hokayem, 39, mother to seven-year-old Daniel who lives with autism, has described how Redhill Primary School has gone above and beyond for her son. When he first attended the school he was non-verbal and unable to communicate his feelings but due to the care of staff, he has been able to break down barriers.
In order to give back to the education setting, she is taking on a gruelling 100,000-step walking challenge on Saturday June 20 with the hopes of raising £20,000. The owner of EH Fitness will be joined by a team of supporters as she embarks on a 17-hour trek from Balerno, down to South Queensferry, across to Musselburgh and back to Balerno through the city centre.
She will set off at 5am in the morning and expects to end the walk at 10pm. All funds raised will go towards refurbishing the school’s soft play area, a space that helps children regulate during the school day and release tension in a safe environment, as well as redeveloping the outdoor area into a dedicated outdoor education space for learning, exploration and play.
