The Kilt Loft❤️

The 12-Day Kilt Course Is Underway!

I’ve officially kicked off the first in-person 12-day course in the new Kilt Loft, and the space is already filled with such lovely energy.

Jill began pleating her kilt today, after practicing “Stitch the Basics” yesterday with Julia—a foundational exercise I do with everyone on Day 1. It’s where we look at everything from needle positioning and thread thickness to tools, technique, and whether you’re a leftie or rightie!

Over the next 12 days, four new students will be joining us, along with two of my regulars (don’t worry—they come in twos and threes so I can give everyone my full attention). That means lots of guided learning, shared laughter, and far less unpicking!

It’s not just sewing—it’s studying the craft, one thoughtful stitch at a time.

🎉 Proud Tutor Alert! 🎉

I’m constantly amazed by the beautiful work my students produce — and these photos are proof!
These are their very first attempts at sewing pleats, and I honestly couldn’t be prouder.

In my classes, you'll learn exactly where to position your needles, how to hold the fabric, and how to apply time-honoured techniques that bring out the best in every stitch. With the right guidance and dedication, this is what’s possible.

Now more than ever, it’s important to study this incredible craft. With kilt maker numbers dwindling, we need more hands (and hearts!) keeping these skills alive.

Kilt making isn't just about learning — it’s about growing, connecting, and creating something truly beautiful.

Kilt making — what’s it all about?

For me, it’s mindfulness in motion. A skill rooted in heritage, stitched with intention, and passed from hand to hand through generations.

It’s about sharing energy, telling stories through textiles, and holding space for tradition while creating something deeply personal.

My in-person classes offer you the chance to embark on your own kilt-making experience — to learn the heritage techniques of this iconic garment, where every pleat carries purpose and every stitch holds meaning.

It’s not just about the tartan... though that cloth carries centuries of identity, place, and pride.

Come learn the craft. Share the story. Join our creative community ❤️

The quiet joy of creating 🥰

Does anyone else feel this?🙂

When I’m making a kilt, I often stop mid-stitch just to admire how the fabric settles — how it folds and shapes itself in ways that feel almost alive. It’s like the cloth is telling its own story as I work with it. 😊

I honestly wish I could bottle the feeling of that visual joy. 🤩

This isn’t “just” kilt making for me. It’s creating a masterpiece — one stitch at a time — and pouring happy energy into someone’s dream garment.
Over 40 hours of hand sewing, plus all the emails, fittings, visits, and texts… all to get it just right.

And every time, I feel so grateful that I took the leap into this craft. ❤️

If you’re thinking about learning, maybe now is the time to make your decision. My 12-day kilt making courses are the perfect way to start — and who knows, it might become the best decision of your life too. 🤗

Who else knows this feeling?😀

It’s a Lifestyle ❤️

Big shout out to rhonapatterson from Lifestyle Magazine for the article in this months issue 🥰

Just before we got together to chat about the article, I realised there was a shortage of local kilt makers. Plus local people didn’t really know about bespoke kilt making or that I was here. Although… I have been out the loop locally whilst concentrating on online training and building this space!

So this article couldn’t have come at a better time 😁

Come and learn the art of kilt making in this beautiful space, where I’ll share my passion and knowledge with you. We’ll stay true to traditional skills and high standards, while connecting with like-minded creatives — sharing stories and stitching heritage together ❤️

Kilt makers united ✨🧵

A very special moment happened this week — Donna (one of my brilliant kilt students) and Leona (an experienced kilt maker) met in person for the very first time.

These two amazing women are the only kilt makers on their respective islands — the Isle of Skye and South Uist — and their connection is a beautiful reminder of how important community is in keeping this heritage craft alive.

To top it off, they even video called me while they were together — and I can’t tell you how heartwarming it was to see them side by side, sharing stories, laughs, and stitches! Moments like that remind me why this work matters.

And guess what? Donna’s sister is now interested in learning too — proof that the ripple effect of heritage and connection is very real.

Kilt making in the Scottish islands can feel solitary at times, but when we come together — even across land and sea — we strengthen the threads that hold this tradition.

Here’s to more connections, more kilts, and more of us keeping the craft alive 💙

Kilt details ❤️

Kilt details really matter.
They’re a quiet way of showing the care, thought, and respect poured into each garment — and each wearer. 😊

One of my favourite details? The buckle.
We call them Chapes here at Paula Duncan Bespoke Kilt Making — that’s the name for the prong of the buckle, if you’ve not heard it before.
It might not be everyone’s favourite job (I know some of my students would definitely say that!) — they can be fiddly at first — but once you’ve cracked them, they’re incredibly satisfying to get just right. ☺️

I love having a choice of buckles to suit the individual kilt.
It’s the kind of detail that shows you've thought not just about the craft, but about the person who’ll wear it.😍

If you’d like to learn how to master the Chapes — and make a full hand-stitched kilt from scratch — get in touch or click the links below ⬇️

Do you have a favourite tartan?

This Tara Murphy from The House of Edgar is one of my absolute favourites 🙂
I love the stripe colour combination , it’s rather pleasing to my eyes 😆

This is the second month of being in the new Kilt Loft space , and although I loved where the table was before, I moved it out for my son to have a games night with his friends.

I instantly felt it needed to stay in the middle of the room. That’s the beauty about having it one wheels! It’s can be positioned anywhere in the room.

And Arthur is loving the new space too ❤️

Here at “Paula Duncan Bespoke Kilt Making”, we sit quietly and indulge ourselves in the art of heritage kilt making.

Enjoying the small groups , we share our creative energy and our keen minds are open to learning new skills. ❤️

I’ve done large classes before and you do not get the time to spend with students. That’s simply fact. Students are left sitting or they have to unpick hours of work , as the tutor hasn’t noticed.

So you may think going somewhere else is cheaper, but you’ll end up paying for more classes to finish!
My small personal classes mean I am there watching you and guiding you through ever stage 😀 And that’s fact.

It’s far more thorough and my knowledge is yours for the taking during our time together 😉

With 40 years of sewing experience, 20 years of kilt making and nearly 15 of teaching you to make kilts, it a no brainer to invest in the best kilt learning experience ❤️

I will be giving up actually making kilts soon and concentrating solely on teaching you guys.

Let’s take this craft off the endangered list 🥰
