A teddy bear birthday cake may not be strictly 17th century but celebration cakes at this time were already taking on a contemporary form with multiple layers, icing and decorations. However, these were only accessible to the wealthy.
Earlier cakes were made of flour and yeast with nuts and honey.

We could argue that chocolate is still good for ones health today... BUT, in the 17th Century chocolate was a new bitter drink taken for medicinal purposes only.
No delicious chocolate cakes on Easter Day!

Canapés didn’t exist in Oliver Cromwell’s time but these were made by The Hungry Roundhead, using authentic 17th Century recipes, in order to celebrate the reopening of Oliver Cromwell House with Earl Spencer and other guests.

Sing a song of sixpence, a pocketful of rye. Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. When the pie was open the birds began to sing. Now wasn’t that a dainty dish to set before the king?
A 17th Century nursery rhyme based on a real pie served to Charles I.

Illusion ‘Fish’ (apple) pie from today’s Festive Feast ... Illusion foods were made to surprise by suggesting they were one thing (e.g. fish) but turning out to be something completely different as in this case - an apple pie.

In the 17th Century bread was made fresh everyday. No food could be wasted so stale bread was made into delicious puddings filled with fruits and spices. It was called Whitepot Pudding.
