Only 3 weeks to go until Exeter Philharmonic Choir performs Cecilia McDowall’s new composition The Weather Book in its entirety for the first time. I’ve heard some of it in rehearsal and it’s already sounding fabulous.

The 3-movement work is 20 minutes long, so the concert also includes established works by Poulenc, Vaughan Williams and Brahms and features not one, not two, but three female soloists.

Early birds can also book a free place at the pre-concert talk Devon & Exeter Institution but space is limited!

Just a month until my talented client Exeter Philharmonic Choir performs the world premiere of The Weather Book, composed for EPC by Cecilia McDowall. I was lucky to meet and interview her at the choir’s away day at Buckfast Abbey yesterday, and I have to say the piece was already sounding fabulous!

Professor Penny Endersby, Chief Executive of the Met Office, is a leading woman in science and an accomplished choir singer.

I interviewed her this week on behalf of Exeter Philharmonic Choir in advance of the Choir’s next concert on 8 November which will premiere a 20-min choral work called The Weather Book, commissioned from one of the UK’s leading contemporary composers, Cecilia McDowall.

The concert also includes established works by Poulenc, Brahms and Vaughan Williams.

For much of last year and through to the end of spring this year, I was leading a double life…

While keeping my and communications business ticking over, I was pouring my heart and soul into the renovation and extension of a little period cottage on the North Devon coast at Instow that we‘ve owned for 30 years.

Today I delivered a workshop on capturing Personal Stories for my blooming lovely client Westbank Community Health and Care

Afterwards I spent a few minutes in the gorgeous garden they created a few years ago, soon after I started working with them, and reflected on all the changes and improvements they have made to their building and its surroundings in recent years to make it more welcoming and fully accessible for all. When your mission is to improve people’s health and wellbeing and make their lives happier, a fresh, uplifting look says a lot and makes a positive impact from the moment you arrive.

My client Westbank Community Health and Care supports unpaid carers year-round through its Devon Carers service, but this week - during national Carers Week - is a time to focus public attention on the tens of thousands of unpaid carers across the county whose work is vital to underpin the NHS and Social Care services.

Devon Carers at Westbank has organised a range of activities and wellbeing experiences for carers this week and has produced a book with tips and advice to help them prioritise their own health and wellbeing, something that tends to get pushed aside when they are caring for someone else, often around-the-clock.

Devon Carers at Westbank, the service which currently supports almost 34,000 adult unpaid carers across the county, has lined up a full programme of events throughout Carers Week this June and will be launching a new book for carers called “Give Me A Break”. 9 June '25
