Today I delivered a workshop on capturing Personal Stories for my blooming lovely client Westbank Community Health and Care

Afterwards I spent a few minutes in the gorgeous garden they created a few years ago, soon after I started working with them, and reflected on all the changes and improvements they have made to their building and its surroundings in recent years to make it more welcoming and fully accessible for all. When your mission is to improve people’s health and wellbeing and make their lives happier, a fresh, uplifting look says a lot and makes a positive impact from the moment you arrive.

My client Westbank Community Health and Care supports unpaid carers year-round through its Devon Carers service, but this week - during national Carers Week - is a time to focus public attention on the tens of thousands of unpaid carers across the county whose work is vital to underpin the NHS and Social Care services.

Devon Carers at Westbank has organised a range of activities and wellbeing experiences for carers this week and has produced a book with tips and advice to help them prioritise their own health and wellbeing, something that tends to get pushed aside when they are caring for someone else, often around-the-clock.

Devon Carers at Westbank, the service which currently supports almost 34,000 adult unpaid carers across the county, has lined up a full programme of events throughout Carers Week this June and will be launching a new book for carers called “Give Me A Break”. 9 June '25

Any horticultural heroes within my Devon Facebook friends who would be up for this? It’s a great project and place to get involved.

Following the wonderful support from the ground works specialist volunteers at Kier Construction, who helped redesign our outdoor allotment space, we are looking for a 🌸 Lead Gardener Volunteer 🌸 to help bring this project to life by working with volunteer groups to get the garden producing fresh vegetables for our community cookery school, food larders, and community meals.

We recognise the great work being done by Exminster Green Spaces and want to complement and extend the opportunities for our communities to get out in nature.

Another role we’re seeking is someone with carpentry skills who can take the lead in building raised beds for the space - this is an ad hoc volunteer role which may only be needed for a handful of sessions.

It’s good to be pushed to do something new every so often. I rarely have to stand in front of an audience and present these days, however, when my fantastic client Westbank Community Health and Care asked me to run some sessions on PR for staff and volunteers at this year’s We Are Westbank event of course I said yes. Then thought, crikey what shall I say?

But when I hit upon a theme - Putting People at the Heart of our PR - it all came together! The topic was a no-brainer really for a charity that supports people to lead happier, healthier, more fulfilled lives and maintain their independence for longer. Thank you, Westbank, for the invitation and all the lovely feedback.

A great turnout for CPRE Devon seminar this week to arm town and parish councillors to fight bad planning applications at a time when the countryside is facing a triple whammy of threats through new government proposals.

Devon CPRE, the local branch of the countryside charity CPRE, is the only charity in the county with proven expertise in planning matters, and I‘ve been supporting them with PR consultancy since 2018 - working to raise their profile in the media, drive membership and increase awareness of a topic (planning) that‘s a hard sell until people wake up to how it affects almost every area of their lives - from housing to renewable energy to transport infrastructure and, of course, the impact of all of these on Devon‘s beautiful countryside.

A sunny outlook for Westbank Community Health & Care as the charity heads into 2025 with big plans to further expand its many services to the community across Devon to help people of all ages lead happier, healthier, more fulfilled lives and maintain their independence for as long as possible.

Thanks to Western Morning News for publishing this opinion piece from CPRE Devon in Saturday’s paper and all the other media outlets who have covered this story ahead of the second reading of Max Wilkinson’s ‘Sunshine Bill’ at Westminster tomorrow.

We’ve had a big PR push to encourage everyone to urge their MP to attend and vote in favour of this common sense piece of proposed legislation, which would make it mandatory for all new build homes to have solar panels on the roof. A complete no brainer for the environment, the countryside and homeowners.

Discover some of the less well-known coastline along the Bristol Channel in my latest feature for ‘The Secret Severn’.

Our coastline never ceases to amaze me - even standing under a motorway bridge with traffic thundering overhead to Wales and back is atmospheric at sunset!
