GULLS CARVE OUT GOALLESS DRAW

National League South
Torquay United 0 Dagenham & Redbridge 0

The Gulls were held to a frustrating 0–0 draw at Plainmoor in a match that lacked clear-cut chances and attacking quality in the final third.

Paul Wotton named an strong starting XI for the fixture, with new signing Cian Dillion leading the line in the absence of Cody Cooke. He was supported by a fluid and dynamic attacking trio of Jordan Young, Louis Dennis, and Callum Dolan, looking to offer pace and creativity in the final third for the Gulls.

Dagenham & Redbridge, looking to kickstart their season after a poor start, reinstated former England international Andy Carroll to the starting line up. The visitors adopted a direct, physical approach clearly tailored to the strengths of the ex-Liverpool striker. Torquay initially struggled to cope with the Daggers’ direct approach, finding it difficult to impose their usual rhythm on the game.

Torquay United dominated possession in the first half, but found it hard to convert their control into clear-cut chances. The best of the early opportunities came when Louis Dennis managed a flicked effort that was comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper. As the half progressed, the Gulls grew increasingly frustrated, with Dagenham & Redbridge remaining compact and disciplined in defence, limiting openings in the final third.

Dennis remained United’s most dangerous outlet, first rising well to meet a pinpoint cross only to head narrowly over the bar, before forcing a smart save at the near post with another promising effort.

Following the half-time interval, the game opened up noticeably, with both sides looking to exploit space on the counter-attack. Callum Dolan found joy down the left flank on several occasions, breaking in behind the Dagenham & Redbridge back line.

As the second half wore on, Dagenham & Redbridge looked content to disrupt the rhythm of the game, managing the tempo and limiting the home side’s attacking momentum.

The Gulls thought they had finally found the breakthrough when new signing Cian Dillion carved out a golden opportunity, skipping past several defenders with a burst of pace. However, with only the goalkeeper to beat, his effort could only find the side netting — a moment that summed up United’s afternoon in front of goal.

Dagenham & Redbridge came close to snatching all three points in the closing stages, as a wicked delivery from Scott was met by Hemmings inside the box. His effort looked destined for the net, but Jay Foulston produced a superb block to preserve a point for the Gulls.

At the other end, in the dying moments of the match, Jordan Young came agonisingly close to snatching a dramatic winner, as his speculative effort crashed against the crossbar — denying Torquay what would have been a sixth consecutive home league victory.

Torquay remain unbeaten at home this season, but will no doubt feel bitterly disappointed to have been held to a goalless draw in a match where they dominated possession but failed to capitalise on key chances.

Torquay United are in 3rd place with 21 points.

Top are Hornchurch with 25 points, Weston Super Mare on 23, and below Torquay are Maidenhead on 20.

Next up is an away trip to Chesham United next Saturday at 3.00pm.

ALL SQUARE AT ST. JAMES PARK

League One
Exeter City 1 Reading 1

Twelve games in, City were made to settle for their first draw of the season as Jayden Wareham’s goal earned a 1-1 result against Reading at St James Park.

A frantic first half saw both sides find the net inside the opening 10 minutes, with Jack Marriott’s early strike cancelled out by Jayden Wareham’s composed finish against his former club. Despite chances falling at both ends, neither team could find a winner after the break as the Grecians recorded their first draw of the season.

Gary Caldwell made just one from his eleven who beat Lincoln City 1-0 on the road last week, with West Brom loanee Akeel Higgins coming in for his first EFL start, in the place of Josh Magennis, who was on international duty and unavailable. Tom Dean returned to the bench, while Kamari Doyle, who was on loan at the Grecians last season, started for Reading.

Both City and Reading enjoyed early spells of possession, but an unfortunate mix-up at the back gifted the Royals an early opener. Johnly Yfeko’s loose back pass was intercepted by Jack Marriott, and the striker calmly slotted home for his sixth goal in six games.

The Grecians weren’t deterred, though, and were soon level through the man who joined from Reading this summer. Good interplay down the right between Reece Cole and Ilmari Niskanen found Wareham inside the six-yard box, and the striker finished first time from a tight angle to equalise.

That goal injected real confidence into City, and Wareham twice came close to adding a second. First, he pounced on a spilled Akeel Higgins cross from the left, only for Royals keeper Joe Perira to gather at the second attempt. Then, in the 22nd minute, a whipped ball into the box from Danny Andrew was inches away from connecting with Wareham’s outstretched boot.

Exeter’s momentum continued to build. Two in-swinging corners from Cole caused real havoc - the first almost sneaking in directly before being clawed away on the line by Perira. From another set piece, Andrew’s deep free-kick was met by the head of Pierce Sweeney in the centre, but his bullet header flew narrowly over.

Reading offered a brief response through former Grecian Doyle, but his effort was well blocked by Jack Fitzwater.

Moments later, City carved out a golden chance to take the lead. Cole beat the offside trap and raced clear, but was caught in two minds between shooting or squaring to the onrushing Niskanen, allowing Finley Burns to steal in just yards from goal and clear.

After an impressive first 45 minutes in his first League One start, Akeel Higgins had the final chance of the half - his low drive from the edge of the box was held by Perira at his near post.

City began the second half confidently, but it was the Royals who carved out the first major chance after the restart. A chipped ball over the top found Doyle on the right, and his first-time cross picked out Marriott, who had beaten the offside trap. Uncharacteristically, the in-form striker blazed his effort over the bar.

That moment swung momentum Reading’s way. Charlie Savage saw a close-range header blocked bravely by Yfeko, before Paudie O’Connor stooped to meet a corner in the 66th minute, only to send his shot narrowly over.

Both managers turned to their benches in search of a decisive goal, and City had to stay sharp defensively - Fitzwater producing a crucial interception to cut out a dangerous cross with substitute striker Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan waiting to pounce.

As the clock ticked down, chances began to fall City’s way again. Their best opportunity came from a late corner by substitute Tom Dean, which almost caught Pereira out as it floated goalwards, but the keeper managed to palm it over the bar at the last second.

A superb last-ditch tackle from Kevin McDonald in stoppage time ensured the scoreline remained level, as the Grecians picked up their first draw of the season.

City are in 16th position with 13 points alongside Port Vale in 15th, Wigan and Plymouth Argyle in 18th.

Plymouth Argyle didn't have a game due too many international call ups.

Next up is an away trip to Stockport next Saturday at 3pm then it's the big game against Plymouth Argyle the Thursday after at 8pm.

CHIEFS NARROW DEFEAT IN DERBY

Rugby Premiership
Bristol Bears 18 Exeter Chiefs 14

It was a fierce Derby Weekend match-up was won in the last quarter by Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon.

Despite there being two tries apiece, the full-time scoreline was decided by crucial penalties kicked for the hosts by Tom Jordan and Sam Worsley while Chiefs were denied a try in the last five minutes.

Bears’ star-studded summer signing Jordan opened the game with a penalty kick in the second minute. Unfortunately for Chiefs, Henry Slade uncharacteristically missed a similar shot at goal to level the score a couple of minutes later.

The flying Fijian figure of Viliame Mata scored Bristol’s first try after 25 minutes. Taking a pass in the five-metre-channel just outside the Chiefs’ 22, the back-rower fended off Dan John’s tackle to run in the score.

Slade responded immediately for Chiefs as they ran ball out of their own half through Ross Vintcent. The Italian released John and the Chiefs worked from there with some swift interchanges between Harvey Skinner and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso eating up more yards before Vintcent broke into the 22, using Slade’s support line to complete the score.

Slade converted the try from in front of the posts to bring the Chiefs within a point.

Bristol had their man-power reduced at the half hour mark, Jordan shown a 20-minute red card for a shoulder to the head tackle on Vintcent. The Chiefs back-rower received attention from the medics before walking from the field, to be replaced by Kane James.

Chiefs capitalised with a try within a minute of the card being shown. A strong carry from Paul Brown-Bampoe breached Bristol territory before Ben Hammersley took the feed from Stephen Varney. Hammersley grounded to the left of the post-pad with his centre partner Slade converting the score.

A dominant involvement from Andrea Zambonin and Jack Yeandle metres from the Chiefs line saved the Exeter men from conceding any points at the end of the half.

Bristol added to their tally just shy of an hour played, mauling their pack over from five metres out with ho**er Gabriel Oghre the try-scorer while Sam Worsley’s conversion curled through the sticks.

The tide turned shortly thereafter when replacement Max Pepper was shown a yellow card for a deliberate slap-down of the ball, the resultant penalty allowing Chiefs to go for the corner.

However, a melee ensued when after repeated mauls for the line, Chiefs looked to have scored in the corner with Bristol captain Fitz Harding shown a yellow. As Slade prepared to take the conversion, the TMO intervened and the resulting decision was a rescinding of the card, a disallowed try and Chiefs facing a home-fed scrum on the five-metre line.

The call buoyed the Bristol men, who marched Chiefs down the field with back-to-back penalties, the last of which was awarded in the 79th minute. Worsley watched the clock tick down before striking the ball to end the game with a successful penalty kick.

Despite the scoreline, Chiefs’ director of rugby Rob Baxter was quick to assure his team that this was not a huge set-back and that if they focused on the positives, they could remain on a progressive curve with their performances.

Chiefs drop to 6th in the table with 9 points alongside Bristol in 5th.

Top are Bath with 15 points, Northampton on 13, Saracens on 11 in third.

Bottom are Newcastle yet to add to points where they lost 57-5 to Sale.

Next up is a home fixture against Harlequins next Sunday at 3pm.
