British Airways cancels summer 2025 flights from Southampton airport

The airline said in a statement it was "suspending our summer 2025 operations from Southampton Airport".

It did not give a reason behind the decision.
An airport spokesperson said the move was "clearly disappointing".

Island police station to reopen after 10 years

Ryde Police Station shut its doors to the public in 2014 as part of public sector austerity cuts.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has announced it will reopen three days a week.

The station, which has a new front counter, will be officially opened on 25 October from 11:00 BST.

CO2 pipeline 'could devastate coast' residents told

More than 150 residents have gathered to oppose plans for a planned carbon dioxide pipeline on the Isle of Wight.

Exxon Mobil is seeking approval for the Solent CO2 Pipeline Project, which would run from its Fawley oil refinery near Southampton to a CO2 storage site under the English Channel.

Islanders filled the Riverside Leisure Centre in Newport on Monday in support of the Green Party's Say No to the CO2 Pipeline campaign.

Rail reopening scrapped over 'value for money'

Plans to reinstate passenger rail services on a former freight line in Hampshire will not be taken forward, the government has confirmed.

In 2022, Network Rail consulted on plans to reopen six miles (10km) of the Waterside Line from Hythe to Southampton, more commonly known as the Fawley branch line.

Protest held over planned school closures

Parents and pupils have staged a protest against plans to close six primary schools on the Isle of Wight.

The island's council announced earlier this month it was considering a recommendation to close Cowes, Arreton, Oakfield, Brading, Wroxall and Godshill primary schools.

It said the closures were an attempt to improve the island's "extremely poor" results in comparison to other areas.

Police begin facial recognition pilot

Live facial recognition (LFR) technology is being used by police in Hampshire for the first time.

Vans in Portsmouth, Southampton, Basingstoke and Wi******er have been scanning people passing a camera during a three-day pilot scheme.

Images are compared to faces put on a police watch list with an alert immediately issued if they match.

Murder arrest after island woman's sudden death

A 76-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the sudden death of a woman aged in her 70s on the Isle of Wight.

Police were called to a home in Glendale Close, Wootton on Monday shortly after 09:40 BST.

Air ambulance fundraising £3.6m for new base move

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is relocating from Thruxton in Andover to a site near Southampton Airport.

The charity has spent £9m on the building in George Curl Way which it now needs to convert into a hangar, helipad and crew rooms.
