In 1973, long before travel blogs, social media, or bucket lists became a thing, a 50 something English woman callled Joan packed her bags and flew to America with a best friend from school.

It wasn’t fashionable. It wasn’t common. It was brave.

They travelled across the States, wide-eyed and curious, soaking up a world that felt impossibly big. Joan found herself in Las Vegas, where she gambled for the very first time, not because she was reckless, but because she was curious. She laughed, she tried, she lived.

She experienced her first drive-through, marvelling at the idea that food could arrive through a car window. And then there was the hamburger. An American hamburger. For an English woman this was not just lunch, it was an adventure.

These aren’t the stories that make headlines. They don’t come with medals or milestones. But they matter.

Joan’s story reminds us that life isn’t only about the big moments we’re told to chase. Sometimes it’s about saying yes when you could easily say no. About stepping into the unknown. About tasting something new, laughing somewhere unfamiliar, and realising you’re braver than you thought.

This is why stories matter. Every life holds moments worth remembering, worth sharing, worth celebrating, Joan was my grandmother and I am so proud of her.

Your story is worth celebrating too.

With Christmas fast approaching, family gatherings being planned, don’t forget to grab stories about your family history, you’ll be glad you did.

This image is of my grate grandmother and father (lady standing and older man sitting) on my dad’s side. They look so austere, but they were lovely. He was a dentist and she had a fantastic sense of adventure. I wish I knew them better.

This is such a beautiful article and so very true.

Life is full of beginnings, endings, and everything in between. Every story deserves to be told with honesty and love not whispered, not rushed, but celebrated.

As a celebrant, I believe in honouring life in all its colours the laughter, the tears, the lessons, and the quiet strength that carries us through. Whether it’s welcoming a new chapter or saying goodbye to one, your story matters.

Take a deep breath today. Celebrate the people and moments that shape who you are. Because every day is a reminder that life itself is worth celebrating.

When a direct cremation takes place, it doesn’t mean saying goodbye has to be quiet or impersonal. A Celebration of Life gives you the freedom to create something truly meaningful – in a place that feels right for you, with words, music and memories that reflect your loved one.

It can be as simple as an afternoon in the garden with friends, or as grand as a gathering in a hall filled with photos, stories and laughter. There are no rules, no time limits, no restrictions – only the chance to say farewell in a way that feels honest, heartfelt and personal.

If you’re thinking about arranging a Celebration of Life after a direct cremation, I’m here to help. Together we can shape a service that captures the essence of your loved one and gives everyone the space to remember, share and heal.

Contact Julie Farmer – Forget Me Not Celebrant to begin planning a farewell that feels right for you.

🕊️ “I don’t want a fuss…”
That’s what so many people say. But here’s the thing: your funeral isn’t just about fuss. It’s about your story. It’s about the people you love being able to say, that was so them.

At Forget Me Not Celebrant, I help people write their funeral service before it’s needed. That might sound unusual… but it’s actually one of the kindest, calmest things you can do for your family.

✨ You choose the tone — warm, funny, reflective, no frills, full of music — whatever suits you.
✨ You stay in control — no guesswork, no stress left behind.
✨ You leave a message, not a mystery.

And no, it’s not morbid. It’s meaningful. It’s you, in your own words.
