As the European Hydrogen Backbone and other major energy projects develop and promote the use of this alternative energy medium, the requirement to compress large volumes of hydrogen to ensure its distribution and storage become apparent.

The reciprocal compressors used to date are not up to this task, with the largest units not even able to compress hydrogen at a flow rate of 10 m3/s.

Greene Tweed has been pursuing the development of a thermoplastic composite impeller, with the goal to use the higher strength-to-weight ratio of this class of materials to increase the rotational speeds of centrifugal impellers to achieve tip speeds of at least 600 m/s, which would enable the (re)compression of pure hydrogen.

Ohmium International (Ohmium), a green hydrogen company that designs, manufactures, and deploys advanced proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers, has announced the official launch of its new gigafactory in Doddaballapura, just outside of Bengaluru, India. Covering close to 14 000 m2 of production space, the manufacturing facility is ramping up to ship 2 GW of fully assembled and tested electrolyser systems to meet the demands of Ohmium’s global project pipeline. 🏭

Air Products, a supplier of hydrogen, has announced it has completed the first fill of the largest hydrogen sphere at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre located on Merritt Island, Florida, US. NASA uses liquid hydrogen combined with liquid oxygen as fuel in cryogenic rocket engines. 🚀

In October 2024, Norwegian Hydrogen and Greeniron H2 AB announced their agreement for the delivery of green hydrogen from Norwegian Hydrogen’s production plant in Hellesylt, Norway, to GreenIron’s first full-scale furnace for direct reduction of metals in Sandviken, Sweden. Now, the two companies have broadened their collaboration, signing a strategic agreement to co-locate and build green hydrogen production plants and direct reduction furnaces at additional locations. 🇳🇴
