"You Can Call Me Al"

When CIVVY sat down with Al Carns MP to discuss Defence spending, swapping PPE for Parliament and his mission to make Britain great again, he was quick to stress his 'policy' for the interview: "There's nothing more important, in my view, than supporting the military, the military community or the veterans who have served, so super happy to talk about anything you fancy."

So we did.

Issue 2 of CIVVY, the new lifestyle magazine for Armed Forces veterans, is incoming. Issue 1 is out now (and being read in a room with a view).

"I am mindful that it can be difficult – whether people want to get out or have to get out of or the due to injury. People genuinely lose direction because they have no purpose all of a sudden." – Sunderland AFC legend Kevin Ball on the importance of 'goals' following a career's final whistle.

⚽πŸͺ– In Issue 2, CIVVY compares notes with 'Bally' – a staunch supporter of Veterans In Crisis Sunderland – and asks 'who has it tougher, the person hanging up their service uniform or the player leaving behind their football family?'.

"The rules were strict, and necessarily so, but they made every decision methodical and deliberate. You couldn’t afford a mistake. You couldn’t afford a misjudged target, and you certainly couldn’t afford to lose sight of the wider strategic picture." – Nick Harper, who served in the Royal Navy from 1990 to 2017, shares his recollections of Op Ellamy (the UK’s military contribution to NATO’s 2011 intervention in the Libyan Civil War) in Issue #2.
