There is no questioning Jovonn’s deep house credentials. Smooth groves have long since oozed out of the American master and now comes another flow of goodness on the Next Moon label’s first foray into vinyl. ‘Back In The Dark’ has it all - the spoken word consciousness, the glowing jazz chords and the cuddly beats. ‘Moov’ Sphere’ gets more dark with bleeping synth sequences and what sound like wind sounds all darting about the mix and then ‘Keep On Dancin’’ lands nice and heavy of dusty drums with swinging hits and Roy Ayres-style melodic goodness. Last of all is the most raw and evocative of the lot with a spoken word sermon making ‘Jessie’s Speech’ really cut through.

Little context is needed. Actress’ latest EP, ‘Tranzkript 1’, continues Darren Cunningham’s exploration of abstract and electronic forms, expanding on the pared-back sound scoured on recent full-lengths (such as Karma & Desire and L###VIII) for a rare EP. Elusive, and driven by both generative elements and finely scalped parts, ‘Tranzkript 1’ may or may not consist in the many part-AI-conducted sounds that Actress has deployed of late. ‘Baby U Lar’ and ‘Guardians’ are like phonetic muddlings and nephilic trods across desert landscapes respectively; they are twinned only in texture and not tempo, uniting only at the intersecting white-noise-glue-space that so characterises Actress’ sound. ‘We Walk Together’ and ‘Kjj_’ span dub chordata and twinging dubieties meanwhile, wrenching the utmost emotions out of the barest recording instruments.

For the latest release on his consistently impressive Mate Records imprint, Madrid stalwart Rafa Santos has turned to Parisian twosome Groove Boys Project. Their take on house tends towards the nostalgic and musically expansive, and the four tracks assembled here fit that description. They begin by joining the dots between Kerri Chandler style garage-house and dreamier European deep house on ‘Keep On Dreamin’ (Club Mix)’, before expertly fusing elements of new age house, Italo-house and solo-laden US deep house on ‘Sunrise (Underwater Mix)’. Over on the flip, ‘The Jazz Palace (Long Ride Mix)’ is a vibraphone-solo laden chunk of rolling deep house warmth and Rawai hook-up ‘Djoon Trax (937 Classsic Mix)’ sees the duo add delicious jazz guitar solos to a sun-soaked deep house groove rich in rubbery synth-bass.

Drop Music marks a marvellous quarter of a century of releases with this new slab of vinyl featuring some gems from disco funksters Crazy P and the house mainstays Inland Knights. Crazy P go first with ‘Disc Odyssey’ which is perfectly indicative of their much beloved sound with its low slung kicks and funky bassline. Inland Knights then offer a trio of in demand & unreleased tracks. ‘Overnight’ is a bumming deep house joint, ‘Walk On’ has an icy late night vibe and balmy pads and ‘Do It Again is a more playful closer, with some killer b-line action. All four, needless to say, are timeless gems, and the fact the last two are appearing on vinyl first the first time makes it an even more desirable cop.
