🦠 Wild birds found dead near Dorchester

The government has issued advice following the discovery that several swans found dead on the outskirts of Dorchester had bird flu.

The landowner is working with Dorset Council and government agencies to reduce any risk to the public. Warning signs will be placed on nearby footpaths, and the area will be monitored.

The risk to human health is very low, but it’s important to follow government advice: stay on footpaths; keep dogs on leads; do not feed wild waterfowl; do not pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds; and avoid touching feathers or surfaces contaminated with bird droppings.

If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, report them to Defra’s helpline on 03459 335577.

Avian influenza mainly affects birds and can spread through contact with infected birds or their droppings. These precautions help protect wildlife and people.

People who keep poultry and captive birds are advised to review their biosecurity measures, keep housing secure, limit contact with wild birds, and follow Defra guidance.

Any signs of illness should be reported immediately to your vet or the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).

🎄 Forest Holme Hospice Charity is looking very festive this Christmas thanks to Haskins Garden Centre.

For the third year in a row, the team at the Ferndown-based centre have donated their time and materials to transform the hospice with beautifully decorated Christmas trees, festive decorations and twinkling lights. These touches have helped create a warm and welcoming environment, bringing comfort and a sense of seasonal joy to patients, families and staff during a particularly meaningful but challenging time of year.

Kirsty Perks, community and corporate fundraiser at the Poole hospice, said: “We are grateful to Haskins Garden Centre for helping to make Christmas special once again. We would like to extend a special thanks to Marc Etheridge, store manager, Mike Knight, assistant manager, and the entire Haskins team for the care, time and dedication they put into organising and installing the decorations. Their continued kindness and community spirit make a genuine difference to everyone who spends time at the hospice.”

💔 Families pay tribute to two Poole men who died in east Dorset collision

The families of the two men from Poole who died in a collision on Saturday 13 December on the B3078 near the junction of Lumber Lane in Knowlton have paid tribute to them.

Dorset Police received a report of the collision, which was believed to involve two vehicles – a black Audi A4 and a blue Volkswagen T-Roc – at 6.05pm.

Emergency services attended and, very sadly, the drivers of both vehicles – Robbie Kenneth Williams, also known as Robbie Diffey, 24, and Peter D’Arcy, 57 – were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Robbie’s family said: “Robbie Kenneth Williams (Diffey), our beautiful, loving, caring, funny, mischievous boy.

“We promise to look after both your baby girls. You’ve left a huge hole in all our hearts. We will forever and always love and miss you.”

The family of Peter D’Arcy said in a statement: “Dad was 57 years old and taken from us far too soon.

“He leaves behind his three children, Kyle, Lucy and Jack, as well as his partner Tara and her two daughters, whom he loved deeply.

“He was a strong, devoted family man and will be greatly missed, forever loved and always remembered by all who knew him.”

🚫 A campaign has been launched in Dorset for people who want to kick their ketamine habit.

‘Forget The Ket’ signposts young adults to the free, confidential support available.

Both nationally and locally, there has been a concerning rise in ketamine use among young adults. Additionally, there has been an increase in ketamine and other drugs being contaminated with more potent synthetic op**te substances heightening the risk of overdose. This campaign aims to educate young adults about these dangers.

📺 A major political programme is to be broadcast live from a venue in Ringwood, giving residents the chance to put their questions directly to leading politicians, influential thinkers and public figures.

Hosted by Fiona Bruce, BBC One’s ‘Question Time’ is the UK’s flagship political debate show, and it will be broadcasting from The Barn, Ringwood on Thursday 19 February 2026.

Each week, ‘Question Time’ delivers lively, unscripted debate shaped entirely by real questions from local communities. From the biggest political stories of the moment to the issues affecting everyday lives, the programme gives the public a rare chance to challenge decision-makers directly, and in February it is Ringwood’s turn.

Sam Coombes, venue manager at The Barn, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for local residents to take part in one of the country’s most important democratic forums. “The energy of ‘Question Time’ is unlike anything else on television, and to experience it live, right here in Ringwood, will be something truly special.”

Audience applications are now open. To be part of this broadcast, apply via: https://eu.castitreach.com/ag/mentorn/questiontime/welcome.html.

💷 Although Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council has a mayor – Cllr Mark Howell – the council is not a Strategic Mayoral Authority and so it isn’t clear whether it could benefit from a new visitor levy which was announced in the November budget.

This levy would enable authorities to charge visitors for overnight trips in hotels, holiday lets and Bed and Breakfasts.

“We value the 10 million visitors we welcome to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole every year, but we also experience significant additional pressures across the area as a result.

“We need to keep our beaches and towns clean, keep residents and visitors safe and manage parking and other travel into the area. Also, in the face of further cuts to Local Authority budgets our ability to market the destination and host events has been severely impeded.” Cllr Richard Herrett, BCP Council.
