🛜 Smart sensors are being introduced in libraries in Dorset and in the future in public toilets, although Dorset Council says they won’t compromise privacy.

These small, discreet sensors are part of the “Internet of Things”, a growing network of everyday objects that can send useful data to help improve how services are delivered. In simple terms, this means items like doors, desks, or counters can now provide anonymous information about how and when they’re used.

🔒 Campaign launched to target New Forest thefts

The New Forest welcomes visitors, however, Hampshire Police are urging people to take care of their possessions as they launch a campaign targeting theft.

This August, posters, leaflets, digital advertising, petrol pump advertising and social media will all be used to spread the message ‘Love it. Lock it’ to bike owners and ‘Take your items with you’ to drivers when they are parking up and visiting the New Forest.

Officers will be focusing their attention by directly engaging with the public around the New Forest with a particular focus on car parks and campsites to highlight this issue to them and to offer tips and resources so they can better protect their possessions from thieves.

🚗 Road safety measures proposed for Ringwood

Roads in Ringwood could be made safer as the town council look into introducing a Speed Watch scheme in the Christchurch Road and Kingston areas.

A resident voiced concerns about speeding at a recent meeting of Ringwood Town Council’s planning, town and environment committee, Cllr Rae Frederick said she had been approached by another Kingston resident and was in liaison with Ringwood Police about the use of a speed gun in Christchurch Road and this location. She said there are Speed Watch teams in Poulner and Hightown, but there had been no volunteers to run the scheme in this area. It was thought there may now be willing volunteers, and she would help set this up.

Members questioned whether Hampshire Highways might reconsider the 50mph speed limit in view of the large development proposed at Moortown and the likelihood that the number of vehicular movements will increase, but this was thought unlikely at this stage.

It was resolved at the meeting that Cllr Frederick would liaise with residents and Ringwood Police to consider forming a Speed Watch scheme in Christchurch Road and Kingston.

🏏 After a historic victory for the Lionesses in the UEFA Women’s Euros, there is a new wave of excitement around women and girls in sport all over the country, and Dorset is no exception.

Dorset Cricket hosted a showcase event on Thursday 31 July to celebrate the power, pride, and progress in women’s sport and inspire young girls to get involved.

Throughout the day, there were cricket skills zones and challenges for young people to take part in, elite coaching workshops with Southern Brave players, panel talks and a marquee networking lunch.

Unfortunately, the scheduled T20 match between Hampshire and Dorset Women’s teams was interrupted by spells of wet weather, however this did not dampen the overall buzz of the day.

🎓 “Completing a degree in the arts is never a passive journey; it demands courage, critical thinking, resilience and vision. Our graduates have created, questioned, and reimagined the world as only artists, designers, performers, architects, creatives, filmmakers, animators, writers and makers can.

“The creative industries are a huge success story for the UK economy. Arts, Design and Culture contributes around £124bn to the UK economy annually. These industries are so important to so many: festivals, theatre, cinema, music, galleries, innovation, technology, health and wellbeing. The interface between creativity, science and technology is becoming more and more apparent, and social prescribing is recognising the arts as key to human health.” Lisa Mann, AUB Academy’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer.

Hi-de-Hi!

All Saints’ Dramatic Society, Bournemouth Life Centre, Thursday 31 July to Saturday 2 August.

✍️ Luke Graham

The classic TV sitcom ‘Hi-de-Hi’ was brought back to life by the cast of All Saints’ Dramatic Society on Thursday 31 July.

This original BBC comedy aired from 1980 to 1988 and was created by Jimmy Perry and David Croft (the co-writers of other classics including ‘Dad’s Army’ and ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’).

Set during the heyday of the traditional British holiday period in the 1950s, ‘Hi-de-Hi!’ follows the entertainers and staff of the fictional Maplins holiday camp in Essex. The myriad cast of characters include scheming host Ted Bovis, pretentious dance tutors Barry and Yvonne, snobbish Gladys Pugh, and bitter children’s entertainer William Partridge, all led by the inept but well-meaning Jeffrey Fairbrother.

The cast performed admirably, and one of the standouts was Sue Josey as chalet maid Peggy, famously played by Su Pollard in the original show. Josey demonstrated great comic timing and physicality to the role.

Dean Smith did well as the uptight manager Jeffrey Fairbrother and did a great job playing a drunk towards the end of the first act.

The stage production was also very well done. Real detail and effort had gone into the making of the elaborate set, as well as the cast’s costumes.

‘Hi-de-Hi!’ is All Saints’ Dramatic Society first production in their new home of the Bournemouth Life Centre, a former art deco cinema turned bingo hall and now a community hub. It was my first time visiting this impressive venue. This was also the debut show of director Georgie Drake, who did an excellent job managing this large and varied cast.

Tickets to the show are still available for performances this evening and Saturday night. Book via https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/asds.
