A 600 mile walk around the coast of Britain, involving dozens of people, is due to finish in Bridlington on July 23rd.

The walk was organised by Railwalks.co.uk, which aims to promote walking from and between railway stations. Founder member Steve Melia has been walking eight stretches of the British coastline, the stretches best-served by rail in each region and nation. Each day has started and finished at a railway station. He has been joined by dozens of Railwalks supporters, who have walked different stretches along the way. The last stretch will leave Filey next Tuesday, July 22nd, and finish in Bridlington the following day.

Railwalks.co.uk was set up by a group of walkers last year. Following an article in The Guardian, (https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2024/apr/30/you-can-walk-virtually-everywhere-in-england-by-using-the-train-the-man-connecting-rail-based-walks) they now have 3,000 supporters across the country.
The group mapped the coast of Britain earlier this year, showing 250 coastal railway stations and the distances between them on the coast path. Surprisingly, this had never been done before.

One of their founder members, Andy Stevenson, designed the coastal maps which gave them the idea to walk the coast this summer. The walk is one of many events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the railways this year.

Steve said:

“I have been walking since May 7th and am now looking forward to the finish. Fortunately, that stretch between Scarborough and Bridlington is one of the most beautiful.

Railways are really useful for walking the coast, because you can keep going in the same direction. You don’t have to circle back to a car park. This long walk has been made up of 60 short walks, which local people can do anytime. The distances between the stations vary from 3 miles to 19 miles, so depending on your fitness, any of them may be walkable within a day.

While I was planning this trip, I discovered another advantage to walking by rail. In many small places, there is no accommodation, unless you carry camping gear, and wild camping is illegal in most places. But if you are starting and finishing at stations, you can stay in one place for several nights, taking the train out in the morning and back in the afternoon. I have been doing a lot of that.

We hope this walk will encourage more people to join our supporters list, on www.railwalks.co.uk, and start exploring our beautiful country by train.”

The Coastal Railtrail is sponsored by trainsplit.com, who have provided Steve’s train travel and T-shirts for the Railwalks supporters.

EXCITING NEWS! ASTRO DOG HOSTING A NEW PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION! - CELESTIAL ADVENTURES II! 😊💖🔭✨️

As many of you know, we, (Astro Dog) have a great passion for night photography, astrophotography and of course the beautiful Northern Lights. While we have always loved gazing at the night sky, night photography and aurora chasing is where all our celestial adventures really began. It was over ten years ago now that we captured our first photographs of meteors and the Northern lights and we’ve been hooked ever since.

Last year, we were invited to take part in Scarborough ART, a fantastic festival (part of The Scarborough Fair) celebrating local creatives at a variety of venues across Scarborough. We were thrilled to have been given the chance to take part and couldn’t turn down this amazing opportunity. And that lead us to hold our first ever photography exhibition “Celestial Adventures”.

Our exhibition last year proved to be very popular and we were blown away by all of the amazing support and positive feedback we recieved. Following our exhibition last year we even won an award for best debut exhibition which we felt very surprised, honoured, grateful and over the moon to recieve.

Following the success of last year’s exhibition shortly afterwards we were already thinking ahead about holding further exhibitions of our photography.

A NEW PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

And so, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting a brand-new Astro Dog night photography and astrophotography exhibition. Similar to last year, we will be exhibiting in The Shakespeare Gallery (previously known as the Shakespeare Pub) a beautiful historical Tudor style building located opposite the Market Hall.

Our exhibition will be free to attend, and will not require pre-booking. The exhibition will include a few longstanding favourites, as well as many brand-newpieces. We will be displaying some of our favourite images that we have captured on our celestial adventures across Scarborough, Dalby Forestry England Dalby, the North York Moors National Park and beyond, including some images that no-one has seen before!

CELESTIAL ADVENTURES EXHIBITION

The name for our photography exhibition will be called "Celestial Adventures II"…

We would love to invite you all to join us on a celestial adventure, a journey through space and time. Exploring the cosmic beauty of the night sky. From the beauty/splendour of a moonlit ocean, to blackened skies adorned with stars, to the majesty of the Northern Lights dancing above the quiet cliff tops. Take a closer look at the jewels of the night sky from millions of lightyears away, such as distant star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. Marvel at nature’s own fireworks from lightning strikes to meteors and stunning atmospheric phenomena that paint our skies in all of the colours of the rainbow.

DATES AND TIMES

Our exhibition at the Shakespeare Gallery will take place between the 22nd July and the 28th July and will be open from 11am to 5:30pm.

Please keep an eye out for updates on this here, on our website www.astro-dog.co.uk and on our mailing list which you are all welcome to join.

ASTRODOG PHOTOGRAPHY PRINTS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE

In the past, we have been asked many times if we have prints of our photography available, and should you wish to take home some of our work, prints of all our displayed photography and more will be available for purchase.

Orders can be taken at the exhibition and soon prints will be made available on our website too.

GIFT SHOP

We will also have a little space themed gift shop which will include a variety of space themed goodies, as well as Astro Dog merchandise. Plus you may get to see the Astro Dog herself. Luna. 🐶✨️

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND VISIT OUR EXHIBITIONS

If you enjoy what we do, would like to view some of our latest photography work and show your support for what we do, we would love to welcome you to our exhibition. We hope to see lots of you there.

Additionally if anybody has a venue, shop, cafe etc and would like to exhibit or display our photography work in the future, please do get in touch.

CLOSING WORDS FROM ASTRO DOG

We will be very busy over the coming days preparing for the exhibition, finalising the processing, printing and framing of our work.

We are over the Moon to be exhibiting our photography work again, we can’t wait to see our latest work printed for the first time and let everyone be able to view our latest work in physical format for the first time too!

If you have a spare moment and are able to share this post and spread the word to anybody who might be interested, we would be incredibly grateful. As always your support means the world to us. You're all stars. 😊💖
