🎬 Happy Anniversary to Gettysburg!

One of the biggest reasons I fell in love with the American Civil War, and ultimately why this page exists today, is because of this fantastic movie, Gettysburg, released on 8 October 1993.

When I first watched it in 2004, I never could have imagined where that journey would take me. Fast-forward to last year and this year, and I've had the incredible opportunity to interview the film's director, Ron Maxwell, himself.

But it doesn't stop there! What began with a film that inspired my passion for history has developed into a wonderful friendship with Ron. This past summer, I even had the fantastic opportunity to visit Ron at his home, where I also got to meet the wonderful History Boy, Jacob Bates! Experiences like these are things I could never have imagined when I first watched the film all those years ago.

Sometimes, a movie does more than tell a story. It inspires a passion, opens doors, creates friendships, and changes your life in ways you could never have imagined.

So, here's to Gettysburg, the film that helped start it all for me and played such a huge part in my journey with the American Civil War.

On this day in 1862, Union and Confederate forces clashed at Perryville, Kentucky, in one of the largest battles fought in the state.

Confederate General Braxton Bragg invaded Kentucky, hoping to draw support for the Confederacy and threaten Louisville and the Ohio River. Union forces under Don Carlos Buell moved to stop him.

Fighting erupted around Perryville on October 8, with Confederate troops initially pushing back parts of the Union army. But the Union eventually held the field, and Bragg withdrew from Kentucky.

Although tactically inconclusive, Perryville was a strategic Union victory. The Confederate invasion of Kentucky had failed.

Casualties: approximately 7,600 combined killed, wounded and missing.

💵 The Birth of the Greenback

With the war costing enormous sums of money, the Union government needed a way to finance the conflict. In 1862, Congress authorised the issuing of paper notes known as United States Notes.

They quickly became known as “greenbacks” because of the distinctive green ink used on their reverse.

The government printed millions of dollars in these notes and put them into circulation, helping fund the Union war effort and keep the economy moving during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

The American Civil War wasn't just fought on battlefields — it transformed the nation's economy, government and currency too.

On this day in 1863, one of the most notorious encounters of the Civil War’s brutal border warfare took place at Baxter Springs, Kansas.

Confederate guerrilla leader William Quantrill and his band of approximately 400 men encountered a Union wagon train es**rted by soldiers from the 2nd Kansas Colored Infantry and the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry.

Quantrill’s men, some reportedly disguised in Union uniforms, launched a surprise attack. After overpowering the Union es**rt, the fighting became particularly brutal, with many Union soldiers killed after being captured.

More than 80 Union soldiers were killed or wounded, while Quantrill’s losses were considerably lighter.

The Battle of Baxter Springs demonstrated the savage nature of the Kansas–Missouri border war, where conventional warfare often blurred into guerrilla fighting, raids and reprisals.

ON THIS DAY — OCTOBER 5, 1864

Battle of Allatoona Pass, Georgia

On October 5, 1864, Confederate Major General Samuel G. French launched an attack on the Union garrison at Allatoona Pass, Georgia.

The strategically important railroad depot was defended by Brigadier General John M. Corse and around 2,000 Union soldiers.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, Corse's men held their fortified positions and successfully repulsed the Confederate assault.

💀 Combined casualties: approximately 1,600

The Battle of Allatoona became famous for the defiant exchange of messages between the two commanders, with Corse making it clear that his men intended to hold the position to the last.

Both the Union and Confederate armies used hot-air balloons during the American Civil War!

The Union established the Union Army Balloon Corps, led by aeronaut Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, using balloons to observe Confederate troop movements, positions and artillery from hundreds of feet above the battlefield.

The Confederates also experimented with balloons, including the famous “Silk Dress Balloon,” reportedly made using silk donated by women because conventional balloon material was difficult to obtain.

The Civil War helped pioneer the use of aerial reconnaissance in warfare — giving commanders a view of the battlefield from above for the first time.
