FhF GreenMedia

FhF GreenMedia FhF GreenMedia is the joint effort of Richard and Sue Loader in photographing plants and gardens for printed and online media.

Our work is almost entirely from our garden in the New Forest and is exclusively available through Gapphotos. Photos of new and revisited plants are often taken in less than optimal environments and frequently when the plants are not at their best. FhF Pix will grow on your new varieties and get the shots at the perfect time and in the right surroundings using the garden settings here at Furzehill.

About 30 years ago my son gave me a little bundle of Snowdrops 'in the green' - they thrived and I have spread them around the place. As far as I know these are the wild type - they do seem to be smaller and 'prettier' than some, probably a clone that is a bit different to most wild ones. They deserve to be a posy all on their own without any company.

Fairweathers Nursery in the New Forest specialises in Aganpanthus, they hold a National Collection of them. Getting access to new varieties and unusual Agapanthus has helped us build a good selection of images on Gapphotos.

Do not ask your children to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable, but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.”

'Little Lemons' is a new, dwarf variety of Clematis tangutica. I grew it Summer 2020 in a terracotta pot and was impressed by flowers from April until late Summer. It stayed dwarf and I enjoyed it's little bell like flowers. I think it is ideal for pot growing and should be a success with patio gardeners. Image available from GAPPHOTOS

Working my way through 2017 photos and saw this shot of Peter Moore Buddleja 'Silver Anniversary' it was looking very fine on July 25th. I see Peter is suggesting it also be used in mixed Summer containers and I think he is onto something, I shall try it next year. http://bredbypetermoore.co.uk/plants/buddleja-silver-anniversary/

Hypericum 'Excellent Flair' started me off on something of a passion for the H. inodorum type hybrids. There are many of them, mostly I believe bred for the cut flower trade but a couple of handfuls of varieties are to be found as hardy plants for sale in plant areas around the UK. Each year there seems to at least one new one, this year the one that has caught my attention is H. 'Miracle Night'.

'Plum Cascade' is a new variety of Heucherella. No surprise that it's a trailer. The profuse starry flowers were a nice surprise, and they have kept coming for the last five months. I have it in half shade, planted in a metal manger type window 'box' with Carex and Selaginella. The three plants have co-existed well even in the hot weather. It's worth deadheading the 'Plum Cascade' to keep it tidy and the flowers coming. Thankfully Heucherellas don't seem to get the rust that tends to clobber my heucheras. Source: Heucheraholics

Out of the dozens of plants I trial each year there's always a handful that stand out as being a bit special. There are three outstanding cv's this year.

The first is Allium 'In Orbit'. This has been gradually building up a nice collection of flower heads from a quite small plant that I potted up from 9cm in the Spring. Not knowing much about the plant I popped it in smallish terracotta pot and treated it like an Alpine.

I like the strong, wind firm stems, good foliage (unlike the larger Alliums) and attractive buds before the flowers eventually pop.
