My new website and venture is now up and running. Salt Fell blends photography with careful fieldwork, creating visual stories that reflect the quiet presence of the wild places and its inhabitants. The aurora borealis season is starting here again in Scotland as the nights begin to draw in. Autumn is a really good time to try and photograph them as skies are often crisp and clear.

You don’t need expensive camera equipment to capture them either-a smartphone camera with its low aperture is ideal. This guide is for iphones, but the principal is the same for any modern phone. Just remember to hold the phone still and steady.

A top tip for viewing the show, is to view it through your camera and phone screen-the phone can pick up far more light and colour in the sky than your eyes can.

Capturing the Northern Lights with your iPhone can be a magical experience. Here are some tips to help you get the best shots:

I have a new venture in development at the moment. Salt Fell Studio, dedicated to the nature and landscapes of the wild Scottish countryside. Expect something different from the usual photo site, with field journals, ID guides, location guides and a nod to how being in nature can improve your overall wellbeing and mental health The logo below is taken from the silhouette of an osprey hovering over its prey at a local loch.
Watch this space.

Pink footed geese at Montrose Basin.
Montrose Basin is one of the best reserves in the country to watch the magical sight of tens of thousands of geese taking off or descending together. This mass-migration of hundreds of thousands of geese from Greenland and Iceland to Britain is a spectacle worth taking the time to enjoy. Best enjoyed at dawn or dusk during September and October.
These sunset shots are taken from the hide on the west side of the basin towards the railway station. Approx numbers to date this year are 31,000, expected to rise in the next few days to 40,000.
